Abri of the Pyre

Abri of the Pyre is a cleric of Jabru, god of death and the dead, and is well known for her role in negotiating the peace treaty between Kinilan and Chelestra that ended the Great War. She believes that her god is a caring one, one who has taken responsibility for the unclaimed souls of the dead and grants them peace and comfort as they slowly pass into oblivion. Death is an unfortunate and unstoppable force, to be accepted, but never encouraged. She viewed the many deaths of people in the Great War as a travesty of epic proportions, and made ending it her life's work.

Personal history

Abri of the Pyre was born to a family of miners in the Iron Hills, near the border with Chelestra. Her town was the site of one of the first battles of the Great War, and the devastation brought by both sides forced the surviving townsfolk to flee. Where many placed blame on one side or the other, she saw the horror of death as a spectre brought by both sides of the war. As the war grew worse, her pity for the fallen grew, and she decided to join the Embrace, a religious order of Jabru devoted to caring for the dead and the dying.   Even as a lowly acolyte, she advocated that the Embrace take a stand opposing the Great War. At first, there was resistance to the idea - the Embrace traditionally took a passive role of observers and caretakers, not meddling in politics, but as the war grew increasingly vicious, opinions began to change. Abri became a cleric by her late 20s, and was elected Pyre, leader of the Embrace, at the age of 47, decades younger than most candidates.   Once elected Pyre, she sent messages to the leaders of both Kinilan and Chelestra, offering to provide a neutral space to conduct negotiations. She called upon Jabru to create a pocket plane that was warded from death - a place where dying was impossible, and he did so. Clerics of the Embrace were given tokens that allowed them to bring representatives to the plane from anywhere in the world, returning them to the exact place they had left when they returned. The negotiations lasted years, and there were several incidents when Abri refused to let either representative leave until she was satisfied that some progress had been made. Other times she interfered, showing representatives visions of the last moments of soldiers lives. Still others she simply managed negotiations.   Eventually, through her incisive logic and sheer force of will, she managed to get both sides to come to terms. It was her guidance that led to the issuing of the Peace Proclamation, and her firm hand that kept negotiating the details of the peace treaty on track, focused on forming a stable and sustainable relationship rather than demands for reparations determining blame.   Shortly after the end of the war, Abri stepped down from her position of leadership, and left the order, though all still afford her the title of Pyre. Nobody has seen her in the years since. Some believe she has passed on, moving on to care for the dead in the afterlife, while others believe she travels the Iron Hills, working to put the arisen dead to rest.
