Iron Hills

The Iron Hills are a rich mining region on the Western border of Kinilan, best known for the diversity of minerals for mining. The majority of battles in the Great War took place in this region, and the region has largely been abandoned by civilized beings for the moment, The principle city in the region is Rethis, where the early stages of the restoration program have begun rebuilding the city.

Geography

The Iron Hills are named for the rocky, rolling hills, that are often topped in outcroppings of unbroken bedrock. A vast network of creeks and small rivers flow through the region, out from the Purple Mountains of Chelestra and starting to gather into the wide plains that make up much of the Kinilan heartland.

Fauna & Flora

The region is heavily forested, with a wide range of deciduous trees growing in the low lying east, particularly beech, chestnut, elm, oak and maple, and conifers in the highlands in the west, predominantly made up of fir, hemlock and cedar. A wide range of mushrooms grow in the autumn, fed by the heavy lead litter, and in happier times, people would flock to the region to try their hand picking mushrooms. In the spring, the forest floor is covered in fast growing undergrowth, carpeting the forest floor in snowdrops, crocuses, hyacinth, and more for nearly a month, before the leaves fill the canopy and cover the land in a light shadow.   The forests are populated with a diverse array of natural creatures. Deer, elk and moose are the largest herbivores, and wolves are the most common natural predator. A wide range of smaller creatures also populate the forest - songbirds, hawks, eagles, raccoons, squirrels, and many others are common. Magically altered or outright supernatural creatures used to be rare in the region, with the dreaded Lingorm being the most noteworthy of the known ones. However, with the destruction of the Anchor of Rethis during the war, any number of new threats might lurk in the forests, waiting for unwary travellers.
