Paithadra
Paithadra is a coastal city in Kinilan known as the birthplace of Arcanomechanics. Once a picturesque fishing village and retreat for a handful of reclusive Magi, it is now a bustling city of innovation, with the local fishery supporting a much larger population of artisans from a wide number of fields.
An Artisan's Paradise
It is said that Paithadra is as if an artisan's paradise was brought down to Irion, and with over half the city's population working in artisanal fields, it's hard to disagree. Magi work hand in hand with master blacksmiths, woodcarvers, masons and more work dilligently to produce the precisely engineered components that go into making Runic Engines and other such arcane machines, each employing a dozen or more apprentices and laborours to support their efforts. The magi and most of the artian masters are collectively known as karframana - specialists in the field of arcanomechanics. The city is known far and wide for being not only the brithplace of Arcanomechanics, but as the source of the highest quality machines in the world. Indeed, artisans trained here are highly sought after for work on arcane machinery elsewhere, despite the fact that those available to work elsewhere are almost exclusively those whose skills have proven insufficient to compete in Paithadra itself.Reliance on Trade
More than most cities, the city of Paithadra is reliant on trade, both with other cities in Kinilan and with other realms in the Sleeping Lands. With very little in the way of local agriculture and only a small fishery producing food and supplies locally, almost everything needed to support the crafters here has to be brought in from abroad: grain, livestock and fresh produce to feed the city's thousands along with metal, coal, timber, textiles, and a number of other materials sourced from across the world, including even products like Goldenweed Oil from the Wildlands. Ships bearing all these arrive at the Tradeyards, the city's robust dock and warehousing district, and leave bearing a much smaller but dramatically more precious cargo of arcane machines.A Village Enclave
Most visitors to Paithadra expect that the original fishing village would long since have been subsumed into the industrial city, but that is not the case. The original expansion of the city started around a small community of reclusive Magi located just outside the village proper, and early into the growth of the city, the founding magi decreed that the village and a strip of forest surrounding it would remain undisturbed. The city has since grown all around it, leaving a semicircular strip of a forest some 200 feet wide between one of the most advanced industrial centres in the world and a humble fishing village. Many of those who lived there have given up their trade and joined the city's more modern pursuits, but several families still stubbornly stick to the trade. Fortunately, people in the city are happy to pay well for fresh fish, making the traditional trade far more lucrative than it was in years past.
