Damarion Cyranios
His Royal Majesty King Damarion Regis Valantine Cyranios
A young prince, born in the late spring, was destined to lead the Kingdom of Escela the moment he drew his first breath. Damarion Regis Valantine Cyranios, the first of his name, son of King Varian Tyrn Valantine Cyranios and Queen-Consort Yvane Glade, was strong and healthy. The childhood to follow was one of courtly education and martial training—for the noble houses were unruly and the guilds were tempestuous. The young Damarion, however, was not so interested in the minutia of how to run a kingdom as large and diverse as Escela. No, his interest was captive to the youthful naivete of heroics. like the legendary warrior-kings of old that battled monsters and gods.
King Varian cared little for such childish ideals. A bloody civil war almost took his crown as a young man, instigated by rebellious nobles and a traitorous uncle, which he promised would not happen to his son. When the embers of rebellion sparked again in the north King Varian reacted with fury and wrath. By then Damarion was a young man, the handsome and beloved Crown Prince, and had never truly tasted the bitter fruit of war. The two years that followed would haunt Damarion for the rest of his life.
Marching north at the head of the Royal Army, Prince Damarion was to subdue the nobles and cities of the Plemic Coast that were preparing for open rebellion against the crown. What was to be a simple show of force against a few squabbling noble houses unhappy with taxes and ancient rights turned into a protracted bloodbath as fires turned into infernos. King Varian's generals, under his orders, gave no quarter to the rebels and turned the sword to the entire northern coast. Cities were burned to ash. Entire noble houses were ended. Fields of wheat were turned into mass graves. The world was nothing but blood and ash.
When Damarion returned to Aurora after what came to be known as the Plemish Massacre, he was greeted with little fanfare. The reign of King Varian Ioannis became brutal, malignant. What lacked in grace and mercy was usurped by fear and cruelty. The guilds thrived mostly, escaping the ire of King Varian through material and financial support of the Crown, but the nobles and the citizens did not receive such special treatment. For Damarion, being the Crown Prince, was forced to watch and obey. What idealism that lasted the two-year massacre was torn away, leaving him embittered and maligned. It was most fortunate for Escela that King Varian the Tyrant was not long for the world, having died in his bed alone one dark, cold night with only the dead to keep him company.
As King Damarion took the throne, he faced the daunting task of rebuilding a kingdom torn apart by his father's wrath. Despite his reluctance to rule and the weight of his own guilt and sorrow, he was determined to rule justly and to bring about a new era of peace and prosperity for his people. He was a man of few words, but those he spoke carried weight and inspired confidence in those who followed him.
King Damarion's reign was marked by his efforts to reconcile with the northern cities and noble houses. He visited the cities that had been burned, offering his apologies and compensating the families of those who had lost their homes and loved ones. He reestablished the ancient rights of the nobles, reducing taxes and granting amnesty to those who had taken up arms against the crown. He even went so far as to marry a northern noblewoman, Magdalen Elfryda, in an effort to heal the wounds and show that the north and the south were one kingdom under a single crown.
King Damarion also made great strides in strengthening the bonds between the guilds and the crown. He understood that the guilds were the backbone of the kingdom's economy and prosperity, and he worked to establish a more fair and equitable partnership between the two. The guilds were granted greater freedom to operate, in exchange for their support of the crown and their commitment to maintain the peace and stability of the kingdom.
After watching his children grow up Damarion quickly realized that Octavian was not fit to rule, spending far too much time chasing his many vices. So instead Damarion named Seraphina his heir.
This decision caused a great deal of controversy and upset within the noble houses of Escela. Many felt that a woman should not rule over a kingdom, especially a kingdom as powerful and influential as Escela. Despite this, King Damarion was unwavering in his choice to name Princess Seraphina as his heir. He believed that she was the best person for the job, possessing a keen mind, a strong will, and a deep love for her people.
Princess Seraphina, under the guidance of her father, was trained in the art of statecraft, diplomacy, and warfare. She was also taught how to handle the pressures and responsibilities that came with ruling a kingdom.
