The Black Hands

Spymasters with Special Duties

The Black Hands are the spymasters of the nations of Ithan and the leaders of the Shades. These titles are not hereditary nor are they able to be bought. None who know enough about the Black Hands' duties to be a Black Hand actually want to be one; all offers to buy the title have ended in rejection on the grounds of incompetence. The first Black Hand — Laëtitia Roy — was highly gifted in espionage and magic. She placed a spell that is carried along with the titles; a spell that is commonly regarded by a blessing by the people, but as a curse among the Shades. Laëtitia's spell made it impossible for any Black Hand to die an unnatural death.

Duties of the Black Hands

The duties associated with being a Black Hand are tenfold. They are not simple duties, and they carry a deep cost: the Black Hands can be nothing more than a shadow among the people. Most Black Hands render themselves barren to ensure their bloodline never continues in correspondence with the tenth duty, but there are those who believe that — if a child of their blood shall be born — it is not conflicting with the tenth duty so long as the child is raised separate from the main populous of Ithan.
