The Shades
The Shades are no more than the shadows you see out of the corner of your eye. Do not look the monster in the face. You're far safer that way.
The Shades are a secretive group of people belonging to the shadows of Koaelore. The are the spies of the spymasters; the devotees of the Koaelora; and the followers of the The Cabinet of Black Hands. They are tasked with following the orders of the Black Hands no matter how much those commands conflict with their own personal morals. Refusing to follow a command will result in the refuser's death or worse.
Shadows in the Night
It is well known that the Shades do their dirty work exclusively at night. From assassinations to warnings to messages to beatings, all their work is done under the light of Luni and the stars. The Shades of Koaelore have a mark they leave with their victims that tell the law enforcement of the area not to investigate. The mark is that of a seven-pointed star in a black ink none can identify. The pure darkness of the ink is unable to be replicated by petty criminals despite the attempts that have been made.
Monks By Day
During the daylight hours, most Shades are indistinguishable from normal monks. The biggest distinction between Shades and average, every day monks is the Shades' silver masks which are never removed. Other distinctions include the Shades' pitch-black robes and their variations of hairstyle. Shades can live and work in any monastery curated by Koaelore. Shades are required to have their weapons at the ready wherever they go, but most keep them hidden in secret pockets or in boots.
