Eighth Lord
Qualifications
The Eighth Lord is selected from one of the ruling houses of Aergradde every six years.
Requirements
The Eighth Lord is typically a high ranking member of one of Aergradde's seven ruling houses, though they cannot have ever ruled over any of the houses.
Duties
It is the duties of the Eighth Lord to keep the peace between the houses and appease enough of them to prevent themselves from being dismissed. It is expected that the Eighth Lord will largely favor their own house, but an Eighth Lord that shows too little favor to the other houses, or fails to navigate the web of backroom deals, relationships, rumors, and courtship that is the Graddean noble courts will swiftly be dismissed by an alliance of five of the seven houses.
Responsibilities
The Eighth Lord is the highest ranking member of The Eight, and is the ruler of Aergradde. They are responsible for mediating disputes between houses, guiding Aergradde in national and foreign affairs, and leading the combined might of Aergradde's armies in times of war.
The Eighth Lord has historically enjoyed the most power over the houses whenever the armies of Aergradde were on the march, be that in times of national defense or when called by the Ackramorian or later Iorian empires. With both empires having withered away, the relevance of international relations has grown and with it, both the power and responsibilities of the Eighth Lord.
Aergradde finds herself surrounded by potential allies and enemies and Aergradde's aristocracy turn to the Eighth Lord for leadership.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
A new Eighth Lord is selected every six years and, though it is legal, it is rare for the same Eighth Lord to be selected by the seven houses twice in a row as the six lesser houses seek to check the power of the house of the previous Eighth Lord. At any time, if five houses deem it necessary, the current Eighth Lord can be removed from their seat and a new selection process takes place.
