Cassor III

Cassor III is a Terra-sized world with no moon that orbits a main sequence star. It is outside the habitable zone of its star and severely tilted leading to the average temperatures on the planet being unsurvivable by humans even in the hottest summers. Despite being the same size as Terra, Cassor III has approximately twice Terra's gravity and a comparable year/day cycle due to its fast orbit and spin. This unusual orbit and spin speed are attributed to Cassor III's unusual core composition. There's a small Mechanicus presence on the world dedicated to studying its unusual mineral composition. The world itself is a barren rock dotted with sealed, environmentally controlled mining facilities that dumb toxic fumes into the atmosphere. The little water the planet had has been collected and is strictly regulated. The most notable feature on the planet is an ancient orbital defence laser array. This titanic defence system is the planet's primary defence against invasion. Though its ancient mysteries have been lost even to the Mechanicus and it is slowly decaying. To supplement its failings a large number of new and well-maintained orbital defence platforms have been constructed. In addition following the disbandment of the planets PDF a large number of mercenaries have been brought in by the Arbites to help supplement the planet's ground defences.

Government

Unlike many planets in the Imperium of Man Cassor III is a democracy split between two parties, the Ministorum backed Theists and the Administratum backed Pitmen. Which party you support defines a lot about your life on Cassor III. The Pitmen mostly draws its votes from the many mining unions that make up the majority of the planet's population. While the Theists pull most of their votes from their devout congregates from one of the many Ecclesiarchy-backed mining instillations. The planet's Enforcers are entirely controlled and run by the Arbites along with most affairs of planetary defence.

History

Possibly one of the most important events in Cassor III's history took place in M37, The Benediction Uprising. The Benediction Uprising was an attempt by the Ecclesiarchy to seize control of Cassor III and its rich mining exports. First, they infiltrated the planets PDF slowly transforming it into a church militia and then began agitating supporters, causing a series of riots that weakened any opposition. Then they launched an armed coup against the Assembly. The church militia was met outside of the Assembly by the planet's Arbites, a thin black line, shields locked and unflinching. The Arbites and church forces stood staring each other down but neither side made a move. For a solid week, the Arbites stood firm till a communication arrived from Cardinal Ulysses Zeelen ordering the troops to stand down or be declared heretics. The leaders of the coup knew that hope was lost and surrendered to the Arbites. Over the coming months, masses were sentenced and millions executed, the proceedings were personally overseen by Lord Marshal Viralus Rex. The local chief magistrate was immediately promoted to Marshal and sent to Terra as a reward for their service. The long-term implications of the Benediction Uprising were that the defence of Cassor III was entirely given over to the Arbites to ensure it was a neutral aspect of Cassor III politics.
