The First Great Yokai War

In 846 AB, The Saint of Tranquility, Saiha el-Ryugamine fought against the The Yonkishi in a brutal civil war over the balance of power between Yokai and human. The Yonkishi were not content to live alongside the growing population of humans as equals. They demanded subservience from the beings they thought beneath them. Saiha pleaded with them to see reason but by then the shadow of war hung too heavily over Kōryō. With a heavy heart, Saiha gathered his Ayakashi and resolved himself to battle them. After nearly 7 years of bloody war Saiha realized that killing the Yonkishi would be nigh impossible. Instead, using what remained of their powers, Saiha and what remained of his Ayakashi allies sealed them into the land itself. Knowing that that alone would not be sufficient to contain them for long, Saiha's surviving Ayakashi made the ultimate sacrifice. They bound themselves to the land and used their life force to strengthen the bindings on the Yonkishi. As a happy side effect, their essence filled the land and helped it prosper, becoming what would come to be known as the Tochigami.
The Tochigami enhanced seals would keep the Yonkishi locked away for nearly 500 years before Mifune's vision of their return would come to fruition.
