Alfons the Fabler

The ferocious bugbears that established and reside in the Bala'orasian Bugbear Bureaucracy are not afraid of other species. Having said that, they do not want members of other species roaming around their territory with impunity. As such, they came up with an idea for how they could discourage aliens, immigrants, intruders, refugees, tourists, and visitors from trespassing on their land.   They constructed massive kites, as elaborate as they were large, that resembled terrifying dragons, and flew them in the air all around their nation, especially along its borders. Then they paid bards and storytellers to circulate rumors throughout Rodinia about hundreds, if not thousands, of dragons plaguing their lands.   These efforts largely have the desired effect. However, on occasion, stalwart adventurers do decide to take the risk of crossing the border to look for glory and/or loot by killing a dragon. In these instances, it is critical for the bugbears to make sure these people are never heard from again.   One stpryteller who has made a career of circulating such rumors is named Alfons the Fabler. He has spent years moving from nation to nation, fron tavern to tavern. He would cozy up to a warm fireplace, and then spin a fantastic tale about a specific dragon, describing it in great detail, and explaining how the bugbears would live in the dragon's territory, yet they would keep their eyes always on the skies above, so they could duck to safety at the first sign of a shadow with wings. Alfons is known far and wide for being an incredible storyteller, going into great detail about each dragon's appearance and behavior. Some people believe he is simply telling tall tales, but they are so entertaining, the people stick around to listen to them anyway.   Every once in a while, Alfons comes up with a new tale about a completely different dragon with which he can regale anyone who will listen. He will write the tale down and give it to the next bugbear he sees. This is his proof that he is doing his job by circulating and encouraging rumors of dragons, and the bugbears pay him a regular stipend for his efforts.   Alfons finds his work very satisfying; he refers to himself as a "niche contract storyteller".

Great article! Has there ever been Dragons in their lands? Are the Bugbears worried about accidentally attracting actual Dragons with their antics?

That's a good question. No, there are no dragons in this land, although there will be dinosaurs in the not-too-far-off future.
