Pavageauxnian Marsh Mushrooms

Since Pavageaux exists in the middle of a massive swamp, the entire region exists in a constant state of decay.  Without any form of management, this decay would get out of control, and disease and infection would run rampant.   However, as it often does, Nature provides a solution.   A wide variety of mushrooms and other fungi have evolved, which feed on the decaying matter, which keeps the decaying matter from getting out of control.   Many of these mushrooms are small, but some of them get larger than a male bugbear!   Certain varieties of these mshrooms are poisonous to humanoids and therefore need to be avoided.   Other mushrooms are extremely tasty and are used in a variety of local dishes.  Some are sliced up into thick steaks, sauteed, and served as the main course of a meal.  Some are extremely healthy and full of antioxidants and are served in a healthy salad along with pearl onions, watercress, and grape tomatoes.  Some are dipped in a light batter, deep fried in oil, and served with a light aioli dipping sauce.   Other mushrooms have certain psychedelic effects.  These fungi are harvested and used by seers, shamans, and people looking for a mind-bending experience.  One specific mushroom is known to open a person's mind and empower them to cast magic spells!   Other mushrooms are neither tasty nor psychedelic, and yet the Pavageauxnians have still found a use for them.  Several of the larger varieties of mushrooms are harvested and used as building material; they have amazing function as insulation.   The entire nation of Pavageaux has formed and matured based on their environment's preponderance of rot and decay.  They have made it the cornerstone of their society.  They are even looking to trade their products with other nations, although no formal agreements have yet been established.

I really love that this is an overview of lots of different mushroom species, and that you talked about the importance of decomposers in an ecosystem. :)   I am including this in my August Reading Challenge. :)
