The Revered Kingdom of Undertop

A thousand generations ago, the dwarves of the Revered Kingdom of Undertop chose to reside underneath the tallest mountain in Rodinia, and have remained there ever since. This rocky location has provided the dwarves with natural shelter.   The shelter of the mountain protects the dwarves against:
  1. all types of precipitation,
  2. certain types of stellar radiation,
  3. impacts of asteroids up to a certain size,
  4. insect swarms that might damage or eat crops,
  5. invaders looking to conquer someone else's home territory, and
  6. solar flares directed towards the planet.
However, the sheltering effect also blocks some things that would be beneficial to the dwarven inhabitants, forcing them to brainstorm solutions that deal with their problems.
  1. They need water for drinking, bathing and watering their crops, so they redirected several rivers through the mountain for their utilization.
  2. They require sunlight for multiple reasons, so they carved a series of horizontal shafts into the mountain's exterior walls and polished their surfaces to a highly-polished shine, to reflect the light and bring it in from the outside. This lighting solution helped the dwarves grow necessary crops, and it also helped them maintain their circadian rhythms, allowing them to tell the difference between day and night.
  3. The thick stone walls caused all sounds made to echo in a disturbingly loud fashion, so they encouraged moss to grow thick on the walls, as a muffling agent.
The dwarves of this realm have been faced with a litany of unique issues because of their surroundings; they have had to use creativity, ingenuity, intelligence, resourcefulness, teamwork, and wisdom in order to brainstorm solutions to overcome these obstacles. Their environment has shaped their evolution.
