Malar (/ˈmɑːlær/ MAHL-arr; /ˈmeɪlær/ MAY-larr)

Malar is the Infernal deity of the nature domain. He is associated with the hunt and cycle of nature, and is considered responsible for lycanthropes, bestial behavior. His dogma concerns hunts, the spreading of lycanthropy, and a general contempt for civilization. Malar has been referenced by other titles such as The Beastlord, The Black-Blooded One, The Wild Hunter, Master of the Hunt, and the God of Wild Nature.

All recent accounts of Malar’s presence has been heralded by an oak leaf blown out of nowhere. Some stories describe a fire-quenching, eerie green glow that's always accompanied by the sounds of faint whistling wind and running or dripping water.

When Malar manifested on the Material plane, had two favored forms: the Beast and the Master of the Hunt. As the Beast, he was a 12 feet (3.7 meters) long, man-high feline creature, sleek and supple in his movements. His ebony fur was said to be matted with blood, which dripped endlessly from his talons and fangs. No records indicate that he ever spoke in this form. The Master of the Hunt form was humanoid and as tall as the Beast was long, though it too had black fur. Above his red eyes were a large rack of antlers able to melt away and reappear at his will, while below them was a whuffling, flesh-draped hole rather than a nose and mouth. Though it is said he was able to speak in this form, it has only been described as a low, growling undertone or vicious snarl.

It is written that Malar’s realm on the Infernal plane was the Deep Wilds. It is said to contain every type of environment found on Kai, although incomprehensibly more extreme versions of that of the Material plane.

Malar’s holy symbol is that of a clawed paw, although no specific animal is ever associated. That said, documents point to several creatures that he favored, such as badgers and deers, as well as monsters including atomies, brownies, dryads, and treants, and unicorns.

Malar is worshiped by a loosely connected following; much of their understanding of their own religion has been lost to time, and there is much debate over this god’s will. A few scattered congregations exist for this god around the world. His followers are close to second-class citizens in most places. Even pooling resources, they don’t have much more than the strength of their arms.

Malarites believe that it is an honor to Malar to drag out the process of hunting. His followers sometimes form in bands, called "Hunts". While forbidden to slay the young or the pregnant, Hunts typically follow his dogma and track down their prey over incredible distances - either cornering them and forcing them into combat, or exhausting them. Malarites are generally frowned upon by most civilizations that have moved on from hunting traditions. Historically, Hunts tended to wreak havoc in their wake. One exception where the worship of Malar is embraced is within the Undersun Empire.

Malar has both clerics and druids in his faith, though their presence varies by location, with druids being the more prominent due to his narrow focus on wild nature without concern for balance. Some barbarians, hermits, wilderness dwellers, and rangers also worship him.

There are rumors of tribes of Lycanthropes called “The People of the Black Blood” who venerate Malar and live somewhere in the forests or jungles of the wild lands.

Tenets of Faith

It is said that when it comes to nature itself, he cares greatly for maintaining a balance between growth and decay, water and drought, fire and ice, — the natural cycle of life. This is considered to be his dogma, and he is emotionally distant in regards to its necessity. This has led some to view him as heartless, though in reality he values all life.

Holidays

The High Hunt

The High Hunt ritual is considered by some to be an intense hunt in which a captured humanoid is released, and for the next day and night attempts to escape the prowling worshipers of the Beastlord. If they manage to survive, they win their freedom as well as, perhaps, other things. There are conflicting records surrounding the legitimacy of this practice still being observed in modern times. There are historical documents that suggest the ritual eventually morphed into a kind of early judicial practice to process criminals.

The Feast of the Stags

The Feast of the Stags day made Malar's worship more tolerable in certain areas. For this event, all people were invited to partake of the bounty of the hunt, regardless of faith. At this time, priests of Malar chose some widows, orphans, elderly, or infirm citizens and promised to provide meat for their tables for the winter.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Malar had both an old and young avatar form that he was known to manifest in when he prowled the Material plane: the Master of the Hunt and the Beast.

Body Features

As the Beast, was said to be a 12 feet (3.7 meters) long, man-high feline creature, sleek and supple in his movements. His ebony fur was matted with blood.   The Master of the Hunt was described as a humanoid, as tall as the Beast was long, though it too had black fur. The flesh beneath the fur of this form was said to be always brown, gray, and looked to have fissures like old wood.

Facial Features

As the Beast, Malar was described having blood dripping endlessly from his talons and fangs.   As the Master of the Hunt, he was said to have a large rack of antlers (able to melt away and reappear at his will) sitting above his red eyes. He had a whuffling, flesh-draped hole rather than a nose and mouth. When he presented himself, sometimes his face would first manifest as either floating in midair among trees, or sprouting from the trunk of an especially large and old tree.

Special abilities

His avatar was capable of controlling any number of animals and forest creatures with the sound of his voice. He could also make plants grow or shrink at any rate he willed. Both of his avatar forms could cast spells from any sphere or school of magic. The Master of the Hunt form would cast spells from the animal, plant, and weather spheres at triple their normal effect, while for his Beast form this only occurred for spells of the weather sphere.

In addition, The Master of the Hunt avatar form could create and animate both plants and fungi, imitating similar spells from any sphere or school of magic. He could shrink or enlarge animals, summon animals to his aid, and command loyalty from any mundane animal, giant animal, or sylvan creature - even turning animals against their owners. He frequently summoned treants to his aid. Furthermore, he could cast telekinesis far beyond the normal weight limits, and was said to speak to other creatures by a telepathic means.
