3. Realmspace Sortie!
General Summary
Two weeks have gone by since Ithryn Galaxath, Lailyn Vatumleth, and Thriss Valdiiryn started at Spelljammer Academy. During their downtime, Ithryn organized a Jai Alai game in the gymnasium that pitted Ithryn, Thriss, and Miken Haverstance against Dodo, Alaral Chaosbringer, and Porven Fullindal (see Classmates). Ithryn's team won, though the game was a bit underwhelming.
During their second "free day" (every cadet gets one day off per week), Ithryn, Lailyn, and Thriss decided to spend the day on the surface of Kal Athrys. But before they could reach the space elevator, they were intercepted by Boatswain Tarto. She led the cadets up to the Sky Dock and set them up on the Hammerhead Ship, the Flighty Foundling. She informed them that an adamantine meteor struck the Spire on H'Catha and that they would be commandeering a vacant Tyrant Ship currently in Kal Athrys's orbit to retrieve it. Petty Officer Winston Ryeback joined the cadets, along with cadet Miken Haverstance and two hired deckhands, Krik'Lit and Pffred.
Spin Cycle Trap!
Once everyone was aboard the Abandoned Tyrant Ship, Winston set up a galley in the Cargo Hold and instructed the cadets to set up the spelljamming helm they were provided on the ship's Command Deck. As soon as Ithryn entered the Command Deck for the first time, a trap triggered that caused the ship to rapidly spin end over end. Thriss unexpectedly teleported onto the Command Deck while Lailyn changed into a spider and attempted to climb her way there. Thriss noticed a command console that was lit up and made his way over to examine it and was able to figure out how to use the console to shut down the trap. With the trap taken care of, the cadets set up the spelljamming helm in one of the chambers of the Command Deck and Miken took on the role of spelljammer.
Like Clockwork!
Things settled down and the cadets relaxed while Winston prepared a meal with the help of Krik'Lit and Pffred. Thriss spent most of his time on the Command Deck studying the different consoles while Lailyn spent nearly 6 hours sitting on the outside of the Tyrant Ship studying the constellations and making adjustments to her star map. Ithryn initially joined Lailyn and stargazed for a while before eventually joining Thriss on the Command Deck.
When Lailyn finally went back inside the ship, she heard clanking and scraping noises coming from the Hollow Deck. She investigated and spotted three Clockwork Horrors going through piles of scrap metal and constructing a fourth Clockwork Horror. They spotted her and began speaking in Thri-kreen before attacking. Lailyn called for help and called for Krik'Lit because she would presumably be able to understand them. Thriss, Ithryn, Winston, and Krik'Lit made their way to the Hollow Deck and helped fight off the Clockwork Horrors. The battle was difficult and there were several close calls. Lailyn went down, and Winston ordered Krik'Lit to give her their last healing potion. Krik'Lit revived Lailyn, but was then killed by one of the Clockwork Horrors.
During the battle, Thriss was able to use magic but he wasn't sure where it was coming from. Once the Clockwork Horrors were finally defeated, Thriss and Ithryn swept the Hollow Deck for any additional threats and found an Autognome that was still alive, but badly damaged. Lailyn healed him and he introduced himself as Wizpop. Winston, overcome with guilt, carried Krik'Lit's body back to the Cargo Hold to preserve her body. Lailyn followed and assisted in any way she could.
Fire in the Galley!
The next morning, Winston, Miken, and Pffred started breakfast in the galley while Ithryn, Lailyn, and Thriss explored the Command Deck more thoroughly. Miken rushed to the Command Deck to report that a fire broke out and they needed help. The cadets entered the galley and found it full of smoke, Winston on the ground with his portable cooking surface up in flames, and three Magma Mephits wreaking havoc. Lailyn extinguished the flames with rain and the three of them were able to slay the mephits without too much difficulty. Unfortunately, Winston's wounds were too severe and he could not be revived. Ithryn, Lailyn, and Thriss discussed what could have caused this and were convinced that Boatswain Tarto deliberately sent them on this mission to die until Ithryn noticed that Miken looked extremely guilty.
It didn't take long to force a confession from Miken. He told them that he was recruited by a mercane to set a trap for Officer Ryeback and was given two spell scrolls to set the trap. He didn't know the identity of the mercane, but he was promised enough money to set him and his fiancé up for life. He claimed he never meant for anyone to die. Ithryn used the sending stone they were provided with for this mission to contact Boatswain Tarto and report the current situation. Tarto ordered the cadets to remain where they are and wait for backup.
