Light Freighter Pilot

The interstellar trade routes of Kantostara are controlled by the United Association of Guilds from Taanruk, so the majority of goods and passengers are transported by their heavy freighters. However, there are also many light freighter pilots, like Lu, who make their living transporting cargo and passenger loads that are considered too small to be profitable enough for the UAG freighters. These pilots own and operate their ships and are strictly regulated to ensure that they only handle the small runs so they don't compete with the UAG freighters for the more profitable jobs.
Light freighter pilots generally live on board their ships. They are self-employed and payment is usually determined by the cargo and distance to the destination. Additional fees may also be charged for hazardous cargo or places that are dangerous to travel to. It's not the kind of job where you're likely to become wealthy, but you can expect to make a decent living.
These pilots are required to have completed the standard training program for small craft flight and general maintenance. They are also expected to have the ability to bond with the scepter tone key crystal embedded within the helm control of their ship and have a working knowledge of portal mechanics and experience traversing the synaptical routes.
While the pilots of the heavy freighters of the UAG enjoy a higher status, there is often a certain mystique surrounding light freighter pilots. They tend to be quite independent and adventurous, and they travel to exotic out of the way places, so they are often thought of as rather heroic. The arrival of a light freighter with a cargo hold full of goods and supplies in a small community that has very little off world contact is a cause for celebration, giving the pilots who regularly make these runs celebrity status.
