Ascension
Ascension was one of the oldest ceremonies among the Magai, and delineates when Magai reached the highest rank available to them: Magai Adept. This progression was celebrated much more strongly than that of a Disciple reaching the rank of Maven, because most Magai only ever reached the rank of Adept once, in a single field. Additionally, while the requirements to become a Maven were well-set, and mostly involved passing certain examinations, the same was not true for reaching the rank of Adept, which was much more subjective. As such, it was celebrated much more strongly, with special ceremonies.
Though most Magai only ever reach the rank of Adept in a single field, it's not unheard of for a Magai to Ascend in more fields. In those cases, the Ascension is still celebrated, though the ceremony overall is lesser, a more low-level occasion.
History
An old ritual, Ascension overall has not changed much over the time it was celebrated by the Magai, and was lost with them at the end of the Second Age. Originally it was celebrated only in the Grand Magai Temple on Haven, even when additional temples elsewhere were built. The trek to the Grand Temple became part of the ceremony for those who lived elsewhere. However, the increasing number of Magai, and the increasingly distant temples, eventually mandated a change, letting Magai Ascend in their own temple.
Participants
The number of people present during an Ascension vary depending on the Temple were it is taking place, as well as the circumstances. Typically, aside from the Magai who is Ascending to the rank of Adept, all Magai Hands in charge of that particular temple are also present. If Hands are away from the temple for any reason (such as missions), the Ascension is typically held off until they return, unless the mission is expected to take a long time, or another participant needs to leave before then. There are only two people who must be present for the Ascension to be valid, however: the Magai who is Ascending, and the Magai Hand in charge of that particular field.
