Unit 731 is officially a Water Purification and Epidemic Prevention unit under the Imperial Japanese Army. In actuality is is a center for weaponized research into microbiology and other biological and chemical research for military application.

The director of Unit 731, General Ishii, is eccentric and does not bind himself to traditional Japanese values in his research methodology. He also gears Unit 731 towards occult and spirit world research in order to harness its knowledge and power.
