Caverns of Glass
Deep in the bowels of the undercity of the Isle of Ratha , engineers dug deep to carve the necessary tunnels for sewage removal from the upper tiers of the city. And there, nestled in the bedrock, they made an amazing, but soon, terrifying discovery.
Deep inside the rock, they found a tunnel system that was carved, entirely, of glass. Smooth edged, rounded corners, made of solid glass, the likes of which no glassblower could have ever accomplished. But, hidden within these tunnels were the real architects; massive, aggressive scorpions measuring nearly two feet long (not including their tails and stingers) and weighing in excess of twenty pounds.
Aggressive and territorial, the scorpions were found to be extremely venomous; a single sting was usually enough to paralyze for a few minutes, and several would cause death within ten. Worse, they rarely stung only once, and even more rarely were alone when attacking.
Prolific breeders, every attempt to wipe them out has merely cost resources and, moreso, lives, as hunters have to crawl through the tunnels and often find themselves face to face with a scorpion in a space so tight they can barely move their arms, let alone deflect a blow with a shield. And, if that weren't enough, efforts have been made to wipe them out with fire, only to discover they possess some sort of natural resistance that makes fire unsuitable for exterminating them.
