Shelley Sanitorium
Purpose / Function
Shelley Sanitorium was founded to house and care for the more detrimentally affected sufferers of Shelley Syndrome. It is also a large prestigious hospital and a leading research center into Shelley Syndrome, other genetic and geneamantic endeavors, and general medical knowledge. All three of these functions are served separately, as it was the belief of the sanitorium's founder that only the greatest and noblest individuals could provide the highest possible quality care to patients who were also their research subjects, and further that there is not an overabundance of particularly great and noble people.
Alterations
Like many buildings in Solaire, the sanitorium has expanded over time both upward and outward. Like only the most imposing and important, this expansion has been done while perfectly preserving the original façade, expanding in every direction and becoming essentially a larger scale model of itself. Internally, of course, while some rooms were expanded, others were left and new rooms were added instead.
Architecture
Like every building in Solaire, the architectural style of the Sun Elves was emulated in the sanitorium's construction. Concrete and marble are sculpted into great domes and arches supported by columns, and wood is used for accents.
History
Lady Mary Shelley founded the sanitorium which bears her name in 42 Sun on her 26th birthday. She would go on to serve as its director for the remainder of her life, and despite a strict meritocratic system for choosing successors, it has never left her family in the centuries since. While it has never wavered in its original purpose of helping those with debilitating Shelley Syndrome, the number of people who have that condition severe enough to be quartered there has decreased, while the institution's reputation as a hospital and especially as a center of geneamantic study has dramatically increased, meaning that today it is much more likely one of those things that the average person thinks of when it is mentioned.
