Cargo Snail
Cargo Snails
The cargo snail has a long and illustrious history in the world of Atios. Although they are primarily used as beasts of burden, they are greatly celebrated and well-loved as pets. Snails are known to be gentle creatures who take instruction well and are easy to train. They are also famous for their memories with the ability to learn complicated routes after only traveling them once.
Cargo snails come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. While most are too small to carry multiple passengers, there are some large enough to carry up to 15 individuals on their back. They are also quite able to pull very large loads of cargo behind them. And although they are not the fastest creatures, they are reliable and easy to care for.
Lifespan
Cargo snails generally live to around 30-35 years of age, with their growth continuing through the length of their lifespan, although their rate of growth decelerates as they reach old age. Cargo snail breeders typically raise snails from the size of an acorn until they reach adulthood at the age of 3-5 years. Afterwards, they are sold to individuals or to snail ranches.
Diet
A good, mineral-rich diet is essential for cargo snails to maintain a strong, shiny shell. Without these minerals, shells grow brittle and are more prone to cracking. Ground cattle bones has become the primary feed used for cargo snails as it is rich in minerals and cheap to procure. Some large snails do exist in the wild, though their lifespans tend to be shorter due to natural predators. These wild snails live as scavengers and have been found grazing on skeletons from creatures of all kinds.
Snails in Atios
Before the return of the Darkness, cargo snail ranches were common, and many leather craftspeople specialized in the making of cargo snail saddles. Although generic models were sold, most prefer custom-made saddles to provide comfort and stability for both the rider and the snail.
