Mechanics of Magic
While scholars and sorcerers don't fully understand every aspect of magic and its sources, they have concluded that it is some magic is linked to the Starless Nights, some comes from kinfire, and some magic originates from the very nature surrounding them. The available magic energy seems to weaken every time the Darkness pulls back. Mages have found ways of storing the mysterious energy and amplifying it with artifacts. There are also special places of power where magic gathers during Starless Nights. Such sites are gold veins for mages, who can tap into the power to fuel their most powerful spells. In order to cast a spell a mage needs a supply of power, knowledge of words and gestures that can shape it, and a will strong enough to bring it forth. Magic incantations muttered by those without proper training can be disastrous in effect. In fact, adventurers trying to cast spells without proper preparation have been known to suffer gruesome deaths as a result. Consequently, most simple folk are afraid to even look at magical scriptures, let alone try to speak them. A sorcerer must have complete control of their own mind. There are various practices and approaches to how to achieve this based on different traditions. Some meditate for years, some spend extensive time in deprivation chambers or train their will by radical fasting. Others believe that extensive study and practice is the key. When casting spells, one must sustain utmost focus, any distraction can lead to catastrophe.
