Duties
The role of the Emperor in the Brazillian government is dissimilar to that of King of America. The Emperor acts as a fourth branch of government that regulates the other branches and balances the power between them. Since 1831, the Emperor has appointed a Prime Minister that heads the executive and legislative branches.
History
The style of Emperor of Brazil was inspired after the role of Napoleon in France, with the idea that the title being designated by the people. Dom Pedro, having been made regent of Brazil by his father, KingJohn VI of Portugal, declared independence. According to legend, John preferred to have the Brazilians gain independence under Pedro than under the citizenry. When Pedro himself became King of Portugal as well, he renounced the title and remained in Brazil.
The title was briefly removed as Emperor Pedro II was deposed in 1878. Pedro returned, and the monarchy was restored. However, his eldest daughter and heir refused to return, renouncing her claim, and thus the line of succession passed to Pedro III. This eventually saw a crisis in 1908 when Emperor Augusto I was challenged for the throne by his cousin, Luis.
