George Washington

George Washington was an American Founding Father who served as the first Chancellor of America from 1790 to 1798. At first reluctant to take the role, he was later convinced by John Adams, John Marshall, and other members of what would become the Federalist Party. Private conversations with KingHenry I, by most accounts lasting for several hours, appeared to affirm his decision.   Washington began to nominate candidates for noble ranks from among those who Washington deeply respected. King Henry accepted almost all of them to the title of Earl.   After his second term as Chancellor expired, Washington declined to seek a third term, and instead wished to retire to his estate in Mount Vernon. Henry I honored him with the title of Duke of Vriginia. This was the first Duke title granted within the United Kingdom of America.   Washington died at his Mount Vernon estate in 1799. King Henry ordered a funeral procession in Columbia, at which the King is one of the eulogy speakers. This set a precedent for how future deaths of Chancellors were handled. While many wished to entomb Washington in a mausoleum in Columbia, Henry honored Washington's wishes and returned him to Mount Vernon. In his will, he bequeathed his land, and title, to his nephew, Bushrod Washington.
