India

The Dominion of India is a large nation in Asia, bordering China, Nepal, Burma, Afghanistan, Russia, Persia, and Tibet.

History

India had been a series of independent kingdoms and empires for thousands of years. These included the Mughal Empire, The Maratha Confederacy, and the Kingdom of Mysore. This was until European exploration and establishment of the East India Company of Great Britain. The EIC began to colonize the region in order to gain a monopoly of the trade routes until the Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Following the rebellion, India became under the rule of the British Crown.   During the The Great War beginning in 1915, India was conscripted to fight on behalf of the British Empire. The Indian Expeditionary force saw conflict in Africa against the German Empire. Russia began to court the Emirate of Afghanistan in order to open up a front on the borders of India itself, offering the Muslim majority regions of Pashtunistan. Though Afghanistan was largely on defense during the war, it received many of the promised regions of Northwest India.   Following the war, Indian nationalism under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, wishing to see independence of India from the British Empire. Gandhi called upon the Princely States of India to establish responsible governments. In 1922, Great Britain agreed to establish India, and later Burma, as a semi-independent dominion. However, many of the princely states retained much of their power and influence.
