Soulbattery™

"Thank you kind anonymous soul for providing energy
to my cybertronics.
May you finally find peace in the void of nothingness."

Common Etherian prayer before using a Soulbattery

The last duty to Etherium

Due to Etheriums experiments with the jelly-like souls of their fallen people have they witnessed proofs that something is askew with the afterlife. Using Soulcommunicators™ they know that being dead but not gone is a scary state to reside in. While some people of Etherium decide to turn their soul into an A.I. to prolong their stay is a commong wording in a last will the 'last duty'.

The Soulbattery is the material to power everything in the tech-country Etherium, a small AAA-battery sized object with a chromatic glowing seam. A coffin for the soul and at the same time a miniature cremation for the very same. Turning the vast of power left in the jelly-soul into usable energy slowly but surely snuffing out the very same.

How the world views it

The technology of soulbatteries is viewed by the world in many ways. The uninformed view Etherium's treatment of their dead as barbaric as can be, actively resenting the use of any tools coming from Etherium which are relying on this energy source. The more informed compare this technology to their funeral pyres, respecting the resurcefulness of Etherium to use everything life has to offer.

But as it is common knowledge that something with the afterlife is going wrong now for a very long time is this energy source more accepted as a humane way to end it all while giving something back. It sounds cruel, but Noctec confirmed in experiments with half-depleted batteries that the soul is not suffering from the process.

Named Batteries

While most prefer to have as much personality stripped away from their last duty insist some in their will, that the battery not only will be named, but also remains in their family instead of getting used communally. Named batteries usually get used to power special items that are close to their relatives' hearts.
"This music got co-produced by my late dad and teacher, who taught me the beauty of the electric guitar. These tunes have soul because he is their energy providor. Thanks dad for letting me teach what you taught me."

Under the cautious gaze of his boss, the goddess Notitia, did the Noctec laboratory worker conduct the experiment to answer the question most asked by their people. Is the new soulbattery truly a gentle way to grant true death to the dead? He sighed as he undid the welding seam of the battery, creating a small hole to push the pike of his Soulcommunicator through. Putting on the headset he heard first nothing, then the confused sleepy voice of the half-spent soul inside.

"Wha? ... Who? Why are you disturbing my slumber? O-oh. That part of my ... will. Tell our goddess that being a battery feels ... like a long snooze slowly turning to a dreamless slumber. I feel no pain. ... This communication ... that causes me pain."

The scientist nods to himself and takes out the hot iron of the welder, bonding the pike of the Soulcommunicator to the battery, closing it again. Looking up to his mechanical goddess he gives her a thumbs up kicking of a new era.

Now this is a unique spin on souls as an energy source, and I kind of love it a little bit. Well done, very cool!!!

I want to conccour with the others - quite unique thinking. I especially loved the quote. The style and writing actually kept me reading and that means something because I tend to not hand SiFi very well and usually do not finish reading these.

„You are so blinded by the present that you cannot be enlightened by the future.”

Well. At least they don't feel any pain... but I don't think I could use one. :c

Then good luck with surviving with outdated technology. Soulbatteries are a constant in Etherian tech now for two millennia.   Or be a sorcerer with a useful ability like electricity or fire. But that requires special magitech technology.

Stories. Ancient reports that survived the millennia. Scriptures that the living gods didn't censor (They only altered the reason for it :p) talking about the first jellified souls, first experiments with it, the gods providing insight that this is unnatural but they have to live with it with Notitia even commencing research to free the souls via technological means.   ...   But people don't think too much of it. If people would ask themselves about the case and when it happened and knew how an Eternal gets created ... how can the four mechanical gods have their soul in their core? How can that be when the first jellified soul appeared a century after the catastrophe that caused the void age throwing the world back by aeons? They have to be somewhat knowledgeable or even responsible for it, having had access to a more local phenomenon of jellified souls. The afterlife is screwed up due to something that happened inside the undocumented decades of the gods' deep burial ... or even before, in the void age: A forgotten timeline the gods themselves seemingly are unable to piece together again.   There is of course also the true reason, but where is the fun in just outright telling it here? :P
