Sound // Song

Music with purpose and power.

"It is an unexplainable oddity!
The powers of a Screecher, dependent on the words of a lost language!?
That is a highly unique state of matter.
Just what are the true secrets behind this useless-on-its-own magic?"

Prof. Mauze Tung

The magic of sound and song follows an unusual, even in terms of symbiosis magic, especially unique pattern. Becoming a Screecher would lead to a non-zero probability of having no magic at all. Given the magic of the voice is dependant on commonly known 'words of power', words of an ancient long-lost language, the mage has to track down words somehow turning them into powerful magic songs and screams.
Luckily all symbiotic spirits of this magic have access to at least one such word, rendering the acquisition of this power to a gamble if the spirit knows one of the sought-after rare words by default.

Elemental // Status

Khesto. travelling bard by Soulwing98

"The songs of ice, wind and fire are nothing special, Nochi. The ancient words for these effects are so woven into the tunes of popular songs that they resonate with my ability.
My song of shadows however, that is my specialty."

Wandering bard Khesto

The multiple words of the dead language, which conjure up the elements, are by now no rarity anymore. Relics engraved with these words are only worth something to collectors or 'weavers' due to their broad availability. Screechers utilize these far more easy-to-pronounce words to enhance not only music but also their default voice. Some become so accustomed to the throaty sound, that they even can turn their voice into literal spitting fire.

Broadly available words of power are Fire, Wind, Thunder and Ice. Every Screecher can somehow utilize them, advanced mages can even strip for example ice from the actual visible part and spread the chill of the underworld with every word spoken. Such status songs are beloved by the more stealthy screechers, being able to even imbue a whistle or whisper with the effects of burn, chill or shock.

Weaving // Rarity words

The main aspect of being a screecher is to refine and fine-tune one's main weapons: Singing voice and composition. The words of power hold magic effects in them, but only a composer can put the raw and unrefined throaty sounds into a bewitchingly gorgeous piece of art. Music is the weapon of the refined Screecher, commonly referred to as 'Composer'. Music carries a purpose, a story and a direction. The word of poison for example can take place in many ways depending on how it gets delivered. Screeching the raw word out into the world causes nausea and sickness to whoever hears it. Weaving the word into a simple and short tune can act like a toxic air bullet to get whistles at the target. Creating a full song around the word and performing it lessens the effect to an intoxicating and sweet sensation that harms or benefits those who hear it without even noticing. The topic of the song dictates the effects of the poison. A happy tune causes euphoria, a sad tune clogs up the throat, making it difficult to breathe and an aggressive song spreads like wildfire, causing pain and suffering without any subtlety ending in a crescendo of agonizing toxicity.

The 36 symbols of symbiotic magic. Common to very rare artefacts when found on the remains of ancient structures.
The 36 symbols of Twinned magic are however even more rare, of some exist only a singular relic or even less.
The arcane Symbols by Soulwing
The lost language is nearly impossible to put into actual words, not following any traditional letter system. Every known School has one such symbol, some more common to find, some treated like treasures holding the monopoly over a certain effect. The lingering and saturated magic of the primal Veil is however the key for the Screecher to understand these symbols and put them into a bass-sounding throaty tact. It is in the nature of the arcane spirit companion to resonate with these relics, recognizing the sound of the purest of Veil energy, adding new abilities to the songbook of their partner.

The nature of their sheer rarity can make a composing Screecher an unpredictable foe. Will their voice stir up emotions? Will there be a physical effect? Harm or benefit?
Does the voice command control or could it even raise the dead?
Nobody knows but the composer.

Physical Alterations

A Screecher faces a unique process of symbiosis. It is not the spirit inside that will cause the body to mutate and adapt to the abilities, no. The words of power, the adding of traces of the primordial Veil to ones Tainted soul will trigger adaptations. Every word of power needs some aspects of the throat to speak them out to get altered and evolved. The word of fire comes with a reinforced throat to bear the heat and ice will adapt the body to better bear the cold. Sound magic is unique in that regard and the only power of the spectrum that will come with physical growing pain whenever a new word gets added to the arsenal. That, however, means as well that a Screecher with many words at their disposal will possess a body impervious to most weaker magic abilities.

Nochi noticed just how resilient her performing buddy was. He never wore any winter jacket, even when the cold winds were freezing off her kobold butt. Khesto however barely even noticed the cutting winds but began to hum a lovely song when noticing his companion being cold. The effect of the warmth-giving tune caused the kobold to warm up noticeably and she continued to follow her buddy through the snow, her heart warm of the lovely song he composed for her when they first met.

I find the idea of sound magic very interesting and great. I also like the drawings - especially the small arcane symbols.
