Manufacturing process

Blood mead is usually made in clay stills that are buried in frozen soil. The alcohol evaporates from the heat of the fermentation, travels up a glass or bronze tube, which cools the vapor and deposits it into glass bottles. The clay stills are periodically opened and the foam and upper layers of fluid are ladled into the alcohol bottles, which makes the mead. Due to the hands on nature of this process, the final result can be as innocent as .5% alcohol by volume (basically a water purifier) to 80% alcohol by volume.
