Noblewhite Blossom

"They say that the Noblewhite Blossom grows on the graves of heroes. If that's true, then looking out over the Foothills is a bittersweet reminder of all the deeds we've forgotton."   ~Cerin Clanless, deputy in Alcedene

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Noblewhite Blossom is a white flower with two layers of narrow white pedals arranged in a starburst pattern. The pedals surround a bundle of seven yellow pollen balls that become Noblewhite Nuts when fertilized.

Growth Rate & Stages

The nuts that fall on appropriate ground shoot a green root down in the spring. A single, pale green leaf sprouts from the top. This stage, the plant is called a noblewhite spade and is a popular medicinal tea used to treat infections.   Over the summer, the green root turns white and branches many microroots out until they have implanted in roughly a square foot of soil. This is called noblewhite root and is an edible but foul tasting vegetable with mild stimulant properties.   The stalk then grows upwards and flowers in the early fall, when the plant is at its most beautiful.   At the end of fall, the fertilized bulbs become nuts, which fall off or are carried by animals to new locations. The next spring, adult plants will grow their flowers and will maintain them all through spring, summer, and fall before dropping nuts again.

Ecology and Habitats

Noblewhite blossoms grow primarily in grasslands, particularly on hills where they can maximize the amount of sunlight that they get. Some will also grow on the slopes of mountains.   Legends say that noblewhite blossoms grow best where a hero has either fallen or been buried.

Biological Cycle

An individual noblewhite blossom will live 7-30 years, dropping nuts every year until it eventually dies.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Noblewhite spades are used in teas and herbal remedies to fight infections and reduce swelling. Dried leaves are often found in medical kits.   Noblewhite roots are sometimes used as an emergency food, but more often they are dried, ground, and used in Howdy Soup.   Noblewhite nuts are almost ubiquitous in trail rations, as they generally keep until they are planted.
