Skink Coat

"Why yes, I have a supplier. Several, really, these things require a supply chain, you see. That's to get them reliably... to get them at a fair price, you see. I know a pirate that raids a Scalykind village now and then, and I set him up with a leatherworker in the Armorer's Union up in Krezzym. You don't need the details, all you need to know is that I can acquire such things for you. I may have some nearby to give you, or you could order a... special cut. Just give me your measurements and I'll ask Captain Skinner to keep an eye out for one your size..."   ~Abide Baht Mig, of Abide and Seak's Bizarre Bazaar

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The special tanning process preserves the ophidian's natural ability to change color to match the surroundings.

Manufacturing process

The tanner begins by grinding the brain into mush and making a paste with the brain and vinegar, then painting the inside of the stretched hide with the paste. After three days, the leather can be cut and worked as normal, though care must be taken to preserve the chromatophore vessels in the skin to maintain the signature ability.

Significance

Wearing a skink coat will instantly mark you as an enemy to Scalykind, and the only species to be likely to overlook the transgression would be Lizardfolk.

Rare

Chameleon leather armor still retains some of the Ophidian's color changing ability, granting advantage to hide checks. This ability is nonmagical.

Made from the hide of an ophidian, this armor is common only in rebel human camps in Shelor. A few enterprising pirates have been known to raid ophidian settlements in order to collect the hide and sell them in Seaudyr. Working the leather is difficult, as is preserving the signature ability to shift colors. The work requires a master leatherworker.
