Thaeri Character in Kollark | World Anvil

Thaeri

Thaeri Lavaille

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Thaeri's in fit, athletic shape from all the travelling and moving around supplies. Around winter, when he remains with Kaevorn for the entire season, he tends to put on weight and lose some muscle mass due to being considerably less active and more well fed. He's generally very healthy, though he'll catch the occasional virus while on his journey.

Special abilities

Thaeri is a Borderless, and can cross the Borders without issue.

Apparel & Accessories

Thaeri enjoys soft, warm colors that remind him of chocolate, fireplaces, and sunset. He has several layers of clothing he enjoys wearing, which he ads to or removes as is required for the weather. He keeps his hair tied back into a ponytail with a simple band, and generally wears a pair of fingerless gloves when travelling.

Specialized Equipment

Thaeri's wagon holds all of his tools, supplies, and goods. It is surprisingly light for taking up so much space, allowing his Andial, Haaku, to pull it with ease.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Thaeri was born in the province of Viers in a town near the ocean. His father worked as a fisherman, and his mother was a tailor. His father would take him out onto the boat some days and teach him to sail, while his mother taught him to sew and mend clothes. When he was seven, his father died while at sea, and his mother continued to raise him alone. As Thaeri grew up, he explored the town, and when he was bored, he explored further and further out. He was yelled at often for being gone for entire days at a time. He started taking some of his mother's creations with him as he traveled, selling them for a good price in other towns who had never seen her work before. He was 14 when he first saw the Borders. He attempted to touch it but was interrupted by a nearby farmer who warned him away. By the time he was 16, Thaeri had been to every large city in the entire province and was making good money with his mother by travelling with her goods.   Thaeri's mother became ill when he was 17, which ended his exploring until she recovered. Unfortunately, she only grew slowly worse and worse, her mental state and memory deteriorating quickly, and Thaeri found that staying trapped in the town to care for her became harder and harder as she started to forget who he was. She died just before his 18th birthday, and Thaeri became incredibly depressed. He decided he could not stand another minute in that town, packed up as much as he could, and left. He traveled for two years, selling the last of his mother's goods and taking payments from others to deliver things on his travels.   He had an especially hard day and that night rested at a Border town, and he found himself unreasonably angry at the Borders for existing. If they did not perhaps he could have gotten his mother help. Perhaps his father wouldn't have died at sea. He went to the Border and screamed his angers and sadness at it and the Ancients, and swung at it in a rage. Instead of hitting the solid Border, he went right through it, and collapsed on the other side, and he began to cry.   He spent a month exploring the province before he met a Borderless woman by the name of Glace Marten. She offered him her book; "A Borderless Guide to Provinces", which he gladly accepted. They traveled together for several months while she taught him how to get by in the world and through the Provinces. They parted ways but kept in touch with letters.   Thaeri became a merchant, buying up goods where they were cheap and common and selling them where they were rare and expensive, and repeating the process as he went, keeping notes and journals, checking Glace's book religiously. He ventured to the central continent Lahda, where he rescued a sick and abandoned young Andial he named Haaku, meaning "bluebird". When she was well again, he attempted to release her back into the wild, but she followed him around until he gave up and made a friend in her. A year later he received his wagon as repayment for a favor from a province that was studying the borders, and he continued on his journey with much more capacity and a place to sleep at night.   Soon after he met Kaevorn after he was attacked in the woods and attempted to escape on Haaku until he fell unconscious due to blood loss. Kaevorn rescued him, took him back to his homestead and nursed him back to health. Thaeri remained with Kaevorn for a while and fell deeply in love with him by the time he felt healthy enough to leave. He convinced Kaevorn to allow him to sell his good so he would have a good reason to go back to see him. Thaeri made his trade runs short and prosperous so he could return to Kaevorn often. He was sidetracked for two years, running the same familiar route as he found his own adventure in knowing Kaevorn, and eventually, Kaevorn admitted his own feelings, and they agreed to become lovers.   Another year later and Thaeri was feeling cooped up again, wanting to see more of the world. He changed his routes and planned to be gone longer, but be back before each season ended. To Kaevorn he promised shorter routes as he learned them and which Provinces were worth trading in. Kaevorn was worried for him, so Thaeri gave him a necklace that would allow Kaevorn to see the beating of Thaeri's heart. Thaeri also gave him a messenger bird that matched his own and promised daily letters before setting off.

Education

Thaeri was home-schooled, mostly by his mother. He was very book smart and often took his studies with him on his travels. He was tutored by Glace Marten for several months and learned a lot from her as well.

Employment

Thaeri currently works as a self-employed merchant, where he'll trade and sell things all over Kollark.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Thaeri considers his greatest accomplishment to be his merchant business and all the people he's been able to assist during his travels.

Failures & Embarrassments

Thaeri sometimes wishes he'd not traveled as much when he was younger and spent more time with his mother before she died.

Mental Trauma

Watching his mother slowly forget everything that mattered to her, including his father, then him, then herself, had a profound effect on Thaeri. He became fearful of forgetting things that had once meant the world to him and began to keep journals. He fears that people will forget about him, so he often writes letters to those he cares about in order to stay in touch. He tries not to let the fear effect his life too much.

Morality & Philosophy

Thaeri has a strong sense of morality, but he understands that every situation is not black and white. He believes in standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, helping those who wish for help, and supporting and celebrating those who wish to make their own path.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Thaeri loves to travel and his main motivation is to feed that wanderlust and explore the provinces. He finds meeting people and learning their stories to be the most rewarding, as well as helping those that he can.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Thaeri is good at numerical and spacial math, able to pack things nearly impossibly well. He's also quite good at sewing, cartography, and his handwriting is lovely. He has an excellent memory.   Thaeri is absolutely dismal at being graceful. He has little flexibility so he isn't good at dancing, either. He is a horrible actor and has difficulty hiding his emotions even when it's needed, as well as lying.

Likes & Dislikes

Thaeri loves hearing stories, the taste of honey, sunny days, lavender honey bread, and curling up in front of a fire. He enjoys honeyrum occasionally, all sorts of homecooked meals, and lying still with Kaevorn. He dislikes being isolated for too long, though he will rough through it in order to travel; he also dislikes citrus, coffee, losing things, and being lost. Thaeri hates when he forget anything, as well as those who are needlessly cruel.

Virtues & Personality perks

Thaeri is kind and respectful of others, and always willing to help even if it makes more trouble for him. He's social and makes friends and conversation easily and is quite confident in himself. He isn't afraid to speak his mind.

Vices & Personality flaws

Thaeri tends to act very rashly, leaping before looking. He doesn't think much of future consequences in dire situations that require an immediate answer, and will do whatever feels right to him in the moment. He can be too nosy for his own good, which has gotten him into trouble plenty of times.

Hygiene

Because of the small amount of space his wagon has, Thaeri keeps it incredibly organized and neat, which translates into his every day life. His travels mean he doesn't know when he'll get to bathe in hot water next, so he usually bathes or showers whenever he gets the chance. He keeps his space and himself clean.

Social

Religious Views

Thaeri is Savonistic and keeps a small shrine to Hunna the Star Stringer that he prays to every morning and night, to always bring him home.

Social Aptitude

Thaeri is very outgoing and willing to talk to anyone; perhaps a bit too willing. He's eager to learn people's stories no matter how mundane they might seem, and can be a bit too nosy for his own good. He is an extrovert, and tends to get antsy when he doesn't have enough people to recharge around. He tries to make friends wherever he goes.

Hobbies & Pets

Thaeri's most beloved partner is Haaku, an Andial doe with a blue coat. He bonded with her after finding her as a fawn nearly frozen to death. He nursed her back to health and released her into the wild, but she followed him at a distance and would reappear at his side by morning, so he kept her. She now pulls his wagon.   Thaeri's hobbies include writing, sketching what he sees, making and editing maps, and playing ukulele. He enjoys listening to stories and telling others stories of other provinces. Any sort of gathering with music and drinking and a sense of community will have him figuring out who he has to hound to get in.

History

Thaeri and Kaevorn met when Thaeri was badly injured after being attacked by bandits in Winick. Kaevorn sensed through the plants that Thaeri was bleeding out and unconscious nearby, and would die if he didn't get help. Kaevorn fought his agoraphobia in order to retrieve Thaeri and nurse him back to health. Thaeri stayed while he healed and they became friends, though Thaeri had an intense crush on Kaevorn from the moment he saw him. When Thaeri had healed, retrieved Haaku, and repaired his wagon, he left with what goods Kaevorn had managed to make and returned two months later to visit him and pay back the profits.   Thaeri returned to Kaevorn's homestead five or six times a year, passing through whenever he got close enough to have the excuse. On a rainy day they ended up sleeping together, but immediately afterwards Kaevorn shied away from the relationship entirely due to Thaeri's travelling and the fear he would die without Kaevorn ever knowing where, how, or why. Thaeri left, and Kaevorn was an emotional mess for two weeks. Then Thaeri showed back up with one of Winick's crystals, created into a necklace with a leather chain that matched a choker that Thaeri wore. The crystal would glow as long as the necklace could feel Thaeri's heartbeat. He gave Kaevorn the maps of his routes and his plans, and one of a pair of Borderless birds that could carry letters between them both. He promise Kaevorn he would make it work, and Kaevorn couldn't deny himself any longer and they began dating.   Thaeri now returns to Kaevorn's homestead every two months once he finishes his route, and then stays for one month before setting off again. During Winick's winter, he remains with Kaevorn until it's warm enough to travel again. One day he wants to be able to take Kaevorn travelling with him at least around Winick, but for now he helps him with small steps to overcome his agoraphobia, like walking around the edges of the homestead and walking out onto the small path leading from the forest up to it.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Both of them are interested in the stories of people, as well as provinces with extreme laws. Thaeri finds Kaevorn's skills at apothecary and herbal crafts fascinating, while Kaevorn enjoys Thaeri's cartography and ukulele skills.
