Phoenix King
The Phoenix King is the head of government for the Silver Empire of Alithanar. Unlike its counterpart, the Everqueen, whose succession law is primogeniture, the Phoenix King is an elected position.
The Phoenix Throne was built by Aenarion the Defender, the First Phoenix King, who battled the creatures of the Void and faded into obscurity. In more recent history, the Phoenix Throne has been bathed in blood, with the mysterious disappearance and later discovered murder of Phoenix King Kelias, husband to Everqueen Ilynara. After the Alithanaran Civil War, the Empire and all of its Princes pushed to rebuild the Empire, and return it to glory. Phoenix King Bel-Adas was then unanimously elected, and is the current incumbent.
Requirements
He who wishes to sit on the Phoenix Throne must be of noble blood, an Elf born in Alithanar, and be named a Prince of one of the Kingdoms in Alithanar.
The Phoenix King should execute sound judgment, shrewd diplomacy, and fierce strength. Only those of the most honorable mettle can sit the throne.
Appointment
By contract, the Phoenix King is chosen from among the Princes of Alithanar, one year after the death of the previous incumbent. Each is crowned during a holy ceremony held at the Shrine of Asuryan and attended by the legions of the Phoenix Guard and Princes of Alithanar. The process is rife with intrigue, emotions often run hot during this fraught and delicate event. Traditionally, the last 30 days of the year of mourning are set aside for the election. However, in practice the debate starts much sooner. Often the politicking starts before the reigning King has even died. Elves love intrigue, and never is the prize greater than when a new Phoenix King is chosen. Before being crowned, they must pass through the Sacred Flame unharmed to prove their purity under the eyes of Asuryan. This is not to say that all Phoenix Kings have been good rulers. In fact many long wars have been started by prideful, vicious and arrogant Phoenix Kings.
Duties
Head of government of the Silver Empire. The Phoenix King must hold court and settle the concerns of Princes, the nobility, and the common people.
The Phoenix King's mandate is to protect and defend the people of Alithanar, and all elves across Korrisia.
