Bibliopolis (Bib-lee-op-oh-luss)
On the world of Kraal, on the continent of Gaiel , there's a city called Quan . A great metropolis founded thousands of years ago, it's the capital of human civilization, but is home to varying peoples from around the world. There stands a vast library, the grandest in the world. Over the centuries it has been built and rebuilt, damaged and restored, expanded with new wings, it has subsumed outbuildings, been magically modified, encroached into extraplanar spaces, and the result today is a sprawling, labyrinthine complex of great halls and wings, bristling with towers, riddled with vaults and basements, filled with secrets and mysteries. Even the most senior sages don't know all the nooks and crannies of the structure, nor can they fully catalogue all the contents.
Most of the library is open only to the resident sages, scribes and assistants, and custodial staff, along with scholars who have gained permission to study the more esoteric sections. There is a subset of mundane reference books available in the public wings, and this selection alone is one of the finest public libraries in the world.
Purpose / Function
A place of great learning, scholarly pursuits, a repository of unending knowledge. Practitioners of arcane and divine, community leaders, and full technical schools of many trades. The library complex also houses private offices and quarters for high ranking residents; dorms, bunkhouses, and guest quarters for students and visitors; bathhouses, kitchens, refectories, and mess halls. A person can live and work on the premises without ever having to venture outside into Quan proper.
