wivern
Basic Information
Anatomy
Wivern are flying amphibian snakes, with four limbs, the upper one being smaller than the lower, with three claws, and a long tail that also have a single long claw, and long scaled wings with dewclaws on the surfaces of the wing ribs. Their jaws are small, with a long gluing tongue capable of capturing a fish or a bilar. Its fangs are less sharp and less threatening than those of a bazilik but are compensated by sharper claws, in addition to the ton of bacteria and viruses.
Biological Traits
Females are a bit thinner and have more bright colours, males have darker colours. Male have a larger head with little points around the cranium.
Genetics and Reproduction
Wiverns are oviparous reptiles, that lives in nests, they reproduce at spring, and lie around five eggs at a time. Those eggs can take up to 6 months to hatch.
Growth Rate & Stages
Youngling start wingless and amphibian, and swim in the ocean in search for easy preys, and using their small legs and arms to go from water to nest. After two years their wings grows full, and they are able to fly, but lose their amphibian ability, however their lungs allows them for long dives.
Ecology and Habitats
Common in all isles of Akeidre, even the smallest. Assumed to be extremely common in Az'atmas, some take the risk of putting nest on Meridian shores. In general, they are not very aggressive, isolated, wivern tend to flee from elnumels, and in group they often just ignore them; except if approaching a nest, the females become very aggressive. They make their nests on the rocky walls of the coast or in the mountains in the centre of the islands, more rarely on the top of a large tree; and fish in coastal waters and rivers. They sometimes attack coastal villages to fish from fish stocks. One of the reasons why the Akereses tend to preserve their existence is that they also feed on bilar.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Fishes, birds, lizards. Youngling start with worms, water larvae and insects before learning to fly.
Biological Cycle
They live inside the island at summer, chasing airborne, and lives closer to water in winter.
Additional Information
Social Structure
They live in a family, around the nest. They can tolerate other families, but tend to chase them from their territory.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
The meat of wiverns is elastic, leaner, and not very tasty, but Akerese can eat it grilled. Their skin, on the other hand, can be used for many things, its elasticity, resistance and water-repellent properties make it a basic material of the akeidre culture.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
All over the islands of Akeidre, and sometime on the coast around loreif.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
A correct vision, adapted for low luminosity, a good hearing especially in low frequencies. Similar to bat, they have high-pitched cry for echolocation.
Lifespan
20 years
Conservation Status
Hunting of Wivern is regulated to avoid decreases in population, domestication is prohibed.
Average Height
Around 2 metres when up on their rear legs
