Akeidre Archipelago

Geography

The Akéidre archipelago is made up of about ten islands spread out in an arc in a south/south-eastern direction, the nearest island is about a hundred kilometres full south of Loreif. It is very difficult to reach the islands other than from Loreif, due to frequent fog and storms and a vast network of reefs equivalent to the Pyrenean chain surrounding the coast. It is theoretically possible to reach the archipelago from the west coast of Riadretahn without difficulty; this was already done by Orc and dwarf explorers when the latter was a fertile valley, before the Elves. Today, crossing the few hundred and thirty kilometres separating the coast from the first Meridian villages is far too difficult for people other than the dwarves and their motorized machines, and the way to the islands far too long compared to the trade route of the Loreif. It is also possible to leave from Oriaka to arrive from the east of the archipelago, but apart from the sacred temple, the eastern islands are nothing more than piles of sand invaded by hostile creatures, which not only makes the journey long, but also dangerous. The eight largest islands have given their names to the eight days of the week in the Meridian calendar, by distortion of the language over the course of evolution. The first five islands (la'han, Ma'rad, Mer'id, Johr'vah and Ver'id), are volcanic islands, and are populated by the Akereses. Saumor and Demes, which are nothing more than sandbanks, are so violently caught by the wind that only a few Shalzak corsairs fight it out with the tritons. The last one, Fered, is actually the highest reef top, rising 200 metres above the water and forming a mountainous island on the surface constantly surrounded by mist; on its side is the Akeidre temple. More precisely, La'han and Ma'rad are two medium-sized islands. La'han is rather flat, and very little dense in forest, reminiscent of the plains in the east of the empire, or those of Meridia. Ma'rad it is very dense in forest of palm and coconut trees, with just as little relief. The island of Mer'id is the largest of the archipelago, officially considered the main island of the archipelago. The centre of the island is high, volcanic, dense in vegetation. Several islets surround this island, dotted with lakes connected to the ocean, serving as a cemetery. Johr'vah is a little smaller than Mer'id, but the presence of a sporadically active volcano makes the island more difficult to inhabit but also very fertile, due to its small size. It is entirely covered with forest, regularly burnt down by the almost continuous lava flows. Ver'id is a land similar in size to the first two, but most of it is occupied by a permanently active volcano, making the island difficult to exploit at the moment. Saumor and Demes are linked to each other by a piece of reef, the first one is larger with a minimum of vegetation, while the second smaller one is completely barren. Both are made entirely of sand and are subject to continuous strong winds. They are both a hostile zone where dream-dancers go to test their powers and whose coasts hide harbours of very aggressive shalzak pirates.

Ecosystem

Most of the inside of isles is volcanic and have scarce fauna, and large flora of palm trees, coconut, pineapple and bananas. The first island, la'han, is mostly flat and plain, most of it is transformed in vast linen and cotton field, or sugar cane. Most of the fauna consist of wivern, baszilik and salamanders, and a lot of common lizards, snakes, and tropical birds (parrots).

Localized Phenomena

The barrier of coral around the isle make them hard to approach from the coast of Naredim, and is reinforced by violent permanent storms that surround the coral barrier. Jor'vah and ver'id are still young and active volcanoes, spilling lava in the water.
