Blood Finch
Blood Finches are small, crimson-tinged omnivorous scavenger birds that circle in vast, wheeling flocks. They often follow airships to collect any discarded litter, debris, or detritus - apple cores or moldy heels of bread tossed overboard. To the unprepared, they may appear harmless, even quaint. But beneath their fluttering wings lies a darker truth.
When hunger gnaws and their numbers swell, Blood Finches shed their scavenger instincts, turning instead to their primal carnivorous thirst for flesh. Their beaks, needle-sharp and hooked for tearing, are perfect instruments for stripping the living as easily as the dead. Sailors who fall asleep on deck have awoken to find their flesh gnawed and bloodied, or worse—an eye stolen by the brazen finches. Worse still, the scent of blood sends these creatures into a maddening frenzy. A single drop can turn a cautious flock into a storm of claw and beak, like aerial piranha.
Most ships arm their lookouts in the crow's nest with slingshots and pouches of iron shot to ward of emboldened Blood Finches.
