The Lancers Guild

The Lancers Guild is a mercenary organization in Wretinridge, known for its combat prowess and discipline. The guild is respected for its courage and honor in battle, yet maintains a pragmatic and amoral stance when it comes to contracts. Their loyalty is to gold and reputation, not to any particular cause or ideology. They fight for those who can pay for their services, regardless of the side they represent.

  Guild Structure:
Squire – The entry-level rank. Squires are new recruits learning the ways of combat and the code of the guild. They perform menial tasks, assist more experienced members, and train rigorously to prove their worth. They can expect to work through hand-to-hand and grappling drills, training with archery and ranged weapons such as slings and spears, and practice with multiple melee weapons ranging from flails and maces to swords and polearms (as well as their maintenance and upkeep.) They will learn techniques fighing mounted or afoot, armored and unarmored. Squires aspire to prove themselves in battle and earn their place as full-fledged Lancers.

  Man-at-Arms – After demonstrating martial fundamentals, grit, and loyalty, Squires are promoted to Men-at-Arms. At this rank, they are fully inducted into the guild and become recognized warriors. They continue to train and drill to improve their skills and survivability, and often serve in the role of quartermaster to continue their familiarization with weapons and armors of the realm. Men-at-Arms are given contracts and actively participate in missions, gaining both wealth and reputation through their work.

  Battle Master – Battle Masters are experienced tacticians within the guild. They have seen battle firsthand and have a deep understanding of terrain, strategy, and tactics. Their role is to lead smaller squads, supervise the drills of lower-ranked members, and ensure missions are executed efficiently. Battle Masters are often tasked with organizing logistics for larger-scale field operations.

  Sentinel – Sentinels are elite warriors, known for their combat prowess. Individuals with this rank may be recognized by the general public as master swordsmen or sharpshooters with longbow or crossbow. They are entrusted with the most dangerous and high-profile contracts, tasked with protecting valuable individuals or leading large battles. Sentinels command respect from their peers and have earned their place through years of service.

  Marshal – Marshals are guild leaders, responsible for overseeing all operations and making final decisions on contracts. They are seasoned leaders and strategists, often acting as diplomats or commanders during regional-sized conflicts. Marshals maintain the guild’s reputation and ensure that the Lancers remain a powerful force in Wretinridge.

  Role in Wretinridge:
The Lancers Guild plays a crucial role in Wretinridge’s economy and politics, providing mercenary services to those who can afford them. While they maintain a strict code of honor in battle, their moral compass is guided by pragmatism and the desire for wealth and status rather than any altruistic ideals. They fight for the highest bidder, whether that be the government, a noble house, or a criminal syndicate. They will accept most contracts, so long as the price is right, and will fight for any side as long as it benefits them. This makes them a powerful yet morally ambiguous faction in the city.

  Their clear chain of command, from Squire to Marshal, ensures the guild remains well-organized and disciplined, focused on maintaining their reputation and expertise. They are a versatile force, able to handle a variety of contracts, including personal protection, moderate to large-scale military campaigns, and clandestine operations.
