Kolean (Kə-leɪ-ən)

Nomadic Halfling pastoralists of the Suscoln Desert Steppe. Known by the outside world for herding woolly goats, creating colorful textiles of fine quality, and living with a cheery raucous to spite the harshness their cold desert home.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

On the steppes, it's everyone working together or not at all. While a good prank in fair to bring people together, withholding important information or resources of the commons crosses the line.

Common Etiquette rules

Compared to many other cultures, the Kolean have very relaxed standards of etiquette. In fact, things like frequent apologizing or respectful terms of address (if they even existed) are usually taken as snubs.

Rough-housing, pranks, and insults are favored signs of affection among family and friends. Acquaintances or even strangers are greeted with a solid slap on the back or shoulder (or just whatever's within reach) to show respect.

Common Dress code

In such a frequently cold place, it helps to bundle up with many warm, insulating layers. Traditional Kolean hats have wide brims to keep the sun out of the eyes, as well as fluffy goatskin flaps that tie under the chin to keep the face warm. The boots are made from a stiff leather, and have pointed toes and heels.

Coming of Age Rites

Each clan has its own traditions for welcoming their youth to the responsibilities of adulthood, usually having something to do with the deeds of a popular ancestor. For example, a rite of passage from the Saloor clan involves hunting astral trout that fly in shoals over the salt flat left by the Lost Lakes, and ceremonially eating them.
