Slehean Wastes

The frigid South pole

"Only three people ever made it across the wastes alive, and that was well before the orcs emerged from the ice. To cross it then was a clear sign of insanity, to cross it these days would be a death wish."
— A wilderness guide in Slehea

At the center of the Slehean subcontinent, centered around the South pole, there is a vast, icy desert that is inhospitable to most. A few especially hardy beings call it home, but they tend to make it even more inhospitable to other creatures that cross through.

Geography

This open, icy plane that stretches for miles is prone to biting wind that races over the land unobstructed, reaching great speeds and picking up pieces of ice and snow like a horizontal hail storm. What little rock there is is permafrosted, and nothing but a species of very hardy algae grows there.

The edges of this region are a bit fuzzy as they blend into tundra and slightly more livable climates, but for the most part it is landlocked. Only a short shoreline meets the ocean, where the water freezes over for much of the year. It's said that some of its ocean ice never melts or breaks off completely, and there are said to be many creatures from elven myth that call the ocean under there their home.

History

In the past the elves knew of its existence and would visit on occasion for rare religious ceremonies or for research. This region wasn't affected very much by The Splice  since there wasn't that much to affect, but a few hundred years ago the Frostbone Orcs appeared here. They were not present here or anywhere else on Kyre before then, and have since been spreading around the world and have displaced many people.
