Aharoin's Scouts

Aharoin's Scouts is a small airborne cavalry unit of the Imperial Guard that is task with scouting and special operations.

Composition

Manpower

Aharoin's Scouts currently have 43 airborne soldiers, called Riders, along with 100 support personnel. The Riders are almost entirely elven, but there is one halfling who has been accepted into the unit. The support staff are more mixed, but still predominantly elven.

Equipment

The Rider's saddles are designed to strap the user in place, so that if they are injured or perform certain aerial maneuvers they will not fall out of the saddle.

Weaponry

The Riders wear a light-weight mithral chain shirt, and carry a round shield. Each Rider carries a short bow, 20 arrows, a sword, a handaxe, and a lance.

Vehicles

Aharoin's Scouts ride hippogriffs that have been bred and trained since birth to be their mounts. The training is a long and difficult process and it takes a special individual to bond and train a hippogriff. The Scout's have their own breeding program at this time, so they no longer search for nests to raid for eggs. The breeding program has been a huge success, and has made the training program easier as the young hippogriffs are raised alongside already trained mounts. This breeding program, and the meticulous training of mounts and Riders is what sets the Aharoin's Scouts apart from any other unit in the Imperial Guard.

Structure

Aharon's Scouts are commanded by Lord Aharoin, and he has two captains that oversee two wings of 20 riders each. Each captain has two sarjeants that command a flight of 9 Riders.

Tactics

The Scouts usually perform scouting and raiding missions, so much of their tactics are observational, and stealthy. When they are assigned a military raid, one flight will swoop in with their lances, while a second flight covers them with their bows. It is difficult for the Scouts to dismount quickly, so they usually don't land and dismount until the landing area is secured, and even then, one flight will remain in the air providing cover, while the other flight lands and dismounts. Once dismounted, the hippogriffs are usually sent back into the air to protect them from being injured or captured, but they stay close by and can be called down to assist, or to re-mount when needed.

Training

The Riders are well-trained in combat, and in animal handling from the moment they are enlisted into the unit. Most recruits already show promise in these areas, as well as stealth and courage. Many recruits do not make it to point of graduating to being a Rider and are not given a chance to raise a hippogriff. Those that do not are often taken into the support unit and given another chance if they prove themselves worthy later on.
