Alavara, the Sunset Dragon

Three centuries after House Hugjarr had been defeated, the Blackheart Legion first met a dragon face to face. The majestic creatures had been seen from afar by anyone sailing near the Ares Islands, but most dwarves assumed that the Godswrath Plateau lay outside their territory. This ended when Embla Blackheart lead her squad on a routine scouting mission.   Using highly mobile warmachines had become a necessity; most skyships had difficulty over the plateau, and steep cliff faces prevented even rugged climbers from making quick headway. As her squad swept the plateau, a storm started gathering overhead, powered by fell magics. Embla sensed the Hugjarr behind the weather and strove to find shelter for herself and her team, but the storm caught all eight jockeys out in the open, blasting them with eldritch lightning that rent their machines and left the dwarves vulnerable to the elements and relatively immobile.   That's when Alavara appeared, setting down before Embla as if the storm roaring around them was a mild breeze. Her scales shimmered purple, and magical energies crackled around her entire being, sparking the exposed wires and parts of Embla's shattered warmachine. "What brings dwarves to this island? We thought the dark ones were destroyed."   Gathering her courage and her wits, Embla extricated herself from the wreck of her machine and stood before the dragon. "They hide underground, and we come here regularly to ensure that they aren't planning to launch another war. Their last one devastated my people."   Alavara nodded sagely. "They arrived here in secret centuries ago, and sadly we did not notice what occurred in their warrens until it was too late. So you have committed to fighting the darkness at the core of the world, then?"   Embla blinked uncertainly. "We are pledged to stop the Hugjarr, and if this darkness you speak of is the force that corrupted them, then we are resolved to stand against that too." Something happened then, a change in the air, as though Embla had woven a spell with her words. Apparently satisfied, Alavara moved to the other machines and helped the dwarves within, though none knew what to make of the mighty dragon who dwarfed smaller skyships. When the squad appeared at the hidden docks used by the Blackheart navy on the following day, no one on the ship could believe the speed with which they'd returned, or that they'd done it without warmachines. Embla's story of the dragon was initially chalked up to delirium, as no dwarf had ever spoken with a dragon in four thousand years, though none could deny Embla's unshakable resolve afterward, or the seeming inability of Blackheart dwarves to become corrupted forever after.
