Averiine

Averiine is a rare material created by the reaction between the Arcane flux created by the shattering of The World Core and the very cold clouds which reside at high elevations. Most averiine is found in and around the terrirtory belonging to the Aarakocra in The Union of Delaria or sometimes in the northern-most western Zerion Mountains. *It can also be found in even larger quantities around Mt. Colossus. It is purely made of ice and magic, appearing like little gleaming crystals of differing fineness, though all of them share the same piercing shade of blue appearing like the eyes of a dire wolf. Averiine is incredibly good at channeling magic and resisting psychical damage when properly processed, making it any blacksmith's dream to get their hands on some pure averiine dust to forge a fine blade or great shield, though currently this dream continues to be unobtainable for most outside of The Union of Delaria except for Xports incorporated who use the averiine to build Airships. When averiine harvesting operations by the first Runic Harvesters first begun and the Aarakocra sold to the Dwarves as well as others such as the High elves of The Ilkasias Republic, the Dwarves wanted to limit who they could sell this amazing new material to. While the Dwarven and Aarakocra leaders belonging to The Union of Delaria could at first not come to an agreement, it was soon settled by a vote from the higher jurisdiction. Pure averiine was no longer allowed to be sold to anybody outside of the The Union of Delaria until it was first manufactured into some other type of product, usually being sold by the Dwarves. Due to lobbying by Xports incorporated they are also allowed to buy pure averiine under certain conditions when they are building Airships. In recent times the Aarakocra have not been happy with this agreement though.
"It's our Runic Harvesters mining the averiine, it's our right to sell it to whoever we want, but these Dwarven lads want to take all our averiine when we get none of the profits from their business."

Properties

Material Characteristics

Averiine takes the form of light bluish crystals, often these crystals are as fine as silt but can be as large as pebbles or a small gemstones, in very rare cases some have been found up to the size of a key lime.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Averrine is extremely light as it is made of ice intertwined with high amounts of concentrated Arcane flux. It's able to easily channel magical energy and is quite sharp when properly carved. It does not melt or evaporate, it can only be broken into smaller and small pieces until the crystal is at an atomic scale and no longer large enough to contain the arcane flux within it, which then bursts out as the ice turns back to water.

Compounds

Averiine while the Arcane flux present within an averiine crystal or averiine dust is often manipulated by skilled craftsmen to infuse it into weapons or armor, averiine by itself is extremely non-reactive to non-magical stimuli or force, instead breaking down into finer pieces.

Geology & Geography

Averiine is almost exclusively found in high elevation places with many clouds around areas of intense fields of Arcane flux.

Origin & Source

Averiine is formed in very cold clouds at high elevation when they are consistently exposed to high amounts of Arcane flux. The already quite cold water particles crystalize by the energy of the flux and then contain a portion of that energy sealed inside of them. Sometimes very small particles of averiine can make it to the surface in the form of snow, sleet, or rain, when averiine hails onto the surface it usually shatters into ultra fine dust right away and is scattered by the wind.

Life & Expiration

Pure uninfused averiine is very prone to damage building over time as small amounts of the averiine slowly break off into fine dust. Without careful handling an averiine crystal may quickly disintegrate and scatter, from that point it is near impossible to retrieve without breaking the crystals into a size too fine to make use of.

History & Usage

History

Averiine only started materializing in the clouds after the split of The World Core when huge amounts of Arcane flux were released into the atmosphere. This averiine was soon found in sizable quantities atop the city of Nai' De, starting the Aarakocra-Dwarf averiine trade. In recent years though, that orderly trade has begun to fall apart.

Discovery

Averiine was discovered at the summit of the city of Nai' De by a meditating Aarakocra sorcerer who noticed strange particles brushing against their face as a cloud passed around them. They managed to harvest some of these particles, but not without destroying many, discovering the brittleness of averiine. As they tried to figure out what the material was they noticed magical energy released when the material was shattered enough, this discovery led them to soon find out the rest of averiine's many useful properties.

Everyday use

Averiine is quite uncommon and only found in high end weapons, staffs or extremely expensive armor. When one does possess averiine it is usually in the form of a fine blade enhanced with magical properties and extraordinary sharpness, as while averiine does shatter, it technically has infinite hardness until it gets to a very small size. Averiine is also used in arcane foci or staffs and very, very costly armor as well as shields.

Industrial Use

In order for averiine to be usable it usually must be infused into metal or bonded with itself using a special technique called fusing, only known by the Dwarves of Ironheart. Once averiine is infused into metal by a process involving the strategic heating and cooling of the crystals it then becomes incredibly useful.

Refinement

While averiine used in weapons, armor, shields, staffs, or solid crystals must undergo varying processes, pure averiine is used by the eccentric as a sort of gunpowder exploding with energy when reacting to intense magic, though properly pulling off the detonation of averiine dust is challenging and dangerous.

Manufacturing & Products

Averiine is used to make extremely sharp swords or ammunition which can channel magical energy, usually coming from the user or a power source built into the weapon. Jewelry using fused averiine crystals is occasionally carried by the exceptionally wealthy people of usually a royal status, trinkets, foci, Airships, devices, machines, or staffs designed to channel magic also often include averiine as an important component. Averiine infused bowstrings or extremely uncommon guns are quite rare but can be used by high level rangers with arcane abilities to channel magic into their shots. Armor infused with enough averiine magically bonded together with other materials is able to resist non-magical force or even channel magical attacks. Though armor containing that amount of averiine is extraordinarily rare. *Averiine is also usable in shields which act similar to averiine infused armor.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Since averiine is made of pure water and Arcane flux it is completely homogenous and not able to produce anything other than magical energy and water when it's destroyed.

Hazards

While averiine is usually harmless, breathing in fine averiine can cause permanent damage to the lungs and cause horrid pneumonia for those who are not careful and exposed a lot to fine averiine. It also releases magical energy when it breaks apart into water, while usually this is not too dangerous, large amounts of this dust will explode into a huge fireball of magical energy if they are on the verge of breaking and are blasted with strong magic.
*While one would have to be very lacking in intelligence to do this, ingesting an entire pile of averiine dust at once could cause your stomach to explode once the averiine is fully broken down by stomach acid.

Reusability & Recycling

Once averiine is infused into a weapon or bonded with magic it will last forever until the metal it is connected with is destroyed, when averiine is crushed it is impossible to repair. Although unlike other materials, averiine is infinitely renewable until some other force causes there to be no more clouds, no more Arcane flux, or makes the atmosphere hot.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Averiine is mostly harvested on the north-western parts of the Zerion Mountains, namely at the peak of Nai' De, an Aarakocra city. They sell most of the averiine in the world and it is a rare and exotic magical material, usually sold to the Dwarves of Ironheart. *With the help of Xports incorporated

Storage

Uninfused, pure averiine breaks apart and shatters extremely easily from its brittleness, to avoid this pure averiine is usually stored in a cold container lined with soft cushioning or fabric often imbued with minor magical enchantments to keep the averiine from turning to dust.

Law & Regulation

As an agreement between the Aarakocra and the Dwarves, averiine harvested within the territory of The Union of Delaria is only permitted to be sold within the union or to Xports incorporated under certain circumstances. Usually it's sold to the Dwarves of the Oerah Volcanoes, while the Dwarves of Ironheart are considered the best at handling averiine anyways, many Aarakocra have begun to think this agreement is unfair as of late.
