Drowned Land Barges

The rivers of The Drowned Land are navigated by small barges that come in three types and home the population of First Loss.

Cutters

The fastest and smallest of the barges, typically holds a crew of one to three and is about 6x9 ft. It is easy to hide and has a shallow hull. It can be used to navigate the smallest of the rivers and is easy to pull up onto land. It will have a small roofed area and a peat brazier on the front which is often kept unlit. It is used for raiding by Coups.

Cutter Wind

Wind is famous for the legendary people who come from it, taught by it's owner - Roke Wind. It has been around since the land drowned, repurposed from a sea craft into one to sail the narrow passages of the Drowned Land. It has space for nine people. There are extra slips of wood on the side of the ship that can be lifted up to protect the sailors from arrows in a retreat.

Draggers

These barges travel across the The Drowned Land with scooping hooks under the boat, dredging the bottom the the river for peat. The peat is then used or traded to keep the economy of The Lost going. A typical Dragger barge is 30x65 ft and holds around 85 crew.    The large hook mechanisms that drag under the boats to collect peat is the invention that has most kept the nation surviving and able to trade in the dangerous environment. The hooks are connected to waterwheels and the inside curve of the hook faces away from the current. This means that they cause little water resistance for the barge (the Draggers they are on are still slower than the Givers or the Cutters). The hooks catch peat and rotate it up to the surface where another gear like wheel catches the peat before rotating out of the way of the wheel.

Dragger Dien

Dien is the largest Dragger craft and well known for the large contingent of engineers that live on it and is owned by Kes Dien. It is often thought of as the scientific centre of the Drowned Lands. It prefers the central area of the swamp and will slowly cycle down large channels.

Givers

This is a type of barge made for trading, being 18x34 ft and having a crew between 20 and 30 depending on how much cargo space they have. They move faster than the Draggers and have more cargo hold than the Cutters, coming in with a crew of around. They are crafted from the local wood with a mix of resin to make them watertight. They are moved with barge poles between the canals of the Drowned Lands.

Giver Orian

The most well known Giver craft, ran by Medake Orian. It is smaller than many others and plies the smaller flows near the edge of the swamp. Many of the members believe in active trade with Al Renya so it makes regular stops at points along the northern edge.
