First Loss
First Loss consists of exiles from Al Renya, banished for failing in battle. Now they live in a dangerous swampy region that has been expanded by human error. Only their engineering skills and refusal to fail again has let them survive.
Structure
Leadership is usually family based and within individual barges or convoys. Beyond this, meetings between barges will decide wider policy.
Demography and Population
About four million people live in the swamps. The population lives on large colony raft fleets, smaller individual rafts or rare trading settlements. There are very few people for the area so it feels incredibly empty and lonely in the large swamp.
Territories
With around 98,000 Square kilometers of area, the swamps of the drowned land feel very desolate. There territories reach the coast in all directions except North, where their land stops as the swamp does.
Military
Some raft communities choose a life of raiding Al Renya to that of the peat collector. They will attack and quickly retreat back into the swamp. The swamp defends First Loss from Al Renya with a host of inherent dangers which deter forces chasing raiders and the occasional attempt for Al Renya to claim the swamp. Illness, exploding swamp gas traps and quicksand all give the swamp a deadly defense. The raiders prefer stealth to open combat and will poison supplies before an attack when possible.
Agriculture & Industry
A common tactic is for a set of fishing lines to be set out as the boat travels. Rafts will also have common rotations where they visit places where useful food - such as rice, herbs, mushrooms and mussels grow. The low hanging branches of the local trees will also have nuts that with practice can be grabbed as a boat moves under one. Hunting is also a common method of getting food. Spears can be used to hunt local reptiles, birds and often fish as well. Some of the larger insects also provide a good meal.
Collecting Peat is the main form of industry and has rafts dedicated to the purpose. Skilled labourers in the form of shipwrights, apocatheries and engineers will also leave the swamp to earn resources for their families.

Education
Education is family based and each member of the family will be in charge of a different area of expertise. On larger rafts it is more common to have communal teachers.
