Vidrohi Bhargot
Vidrohi Bhargot
The day started as normal. Vidrohi woke up in his parent’s house after another night of drinks at club, After Sunset. Last night, Vidrohi was celebrating the end of his schooling with some other classmates.
But Vidrohi could only vaguely remember how the night ended; he had one too many drinks when a fight broke out between one of his school mates and someone else.
Fortunately, a club dancer friend of his, Ishana, was getting off work at that moment. She ushered him home, warning Vidrohi to lay low, whatever that means.
As he wondered what Ishana’s warning could mean, Vidrohi went downstair to eat breakfast. There like always was his mother, serving plates for the family.
His father was waiting at the table, arms crossed and face stern. As soon as Vidrohi entered the room, his father verbally pounced on him.
“Vidrohi!” he shouted, rising from the table to loom over him. “Do you have any idea what your actions have done?!”
Vidrohi noticed his mother flinch from the corner of his eye, but he addressed his angered father first.
Vidrohi shrugged “What did I do?
Father shoved Vidrohi, “Last night you were caught stealing from a noble! How could you put my business in jeopardy like that?”
Vidrohi fell on his back, too hungover to resist being shoved. He heard his mother gasp, felt her pull him into sitting up and hugging him.
He knew he did not steal from anybody! He was out last night minding his own business, just having some drinks! Then he remembered the fight that broke out last night.
Vidrohi stood, helping his mother do the same. He then explained to his father what he saw last night, a fight breaking out between a school mate and perhaps a noble?
Alas, his father didn’t believe him. “Do not lie to me, Vidrohi, Dipen’s father explained everything to me this morning.
Suddenly the front door of the house burst open. The Bhargat family run to the front room to see two Riordan Militants enter the house without permission.
“Vidrohi Bhargat, you are to be punished publicly for the slight against House Sarason.”
Vidrohi is grabbed by each arm, forcibly dragged from his home. He begs to be let go, claiming his innocence. He turns back to plead with his parents to defend him, only to see his father holding crying mother.
That is when Vidrohi realizes his father could not care less about his wellbeing, not at the expense of his father’s coin purse.
Vidrohi is brought to the Square of Punishment. There waiting with a cane is a noble man he had seen a few times at club After Sunset.
That day Vidrohi receives 200 agonizing strikes to his bare back.
When he awakes next, he is laying on his stomach, back bandaged but still stinging. Vidrohi assumes he was brought home and is proved correct when his mother enters to tend to him.
A month after the punishment, Vidrohi feels unsafe in his family home. His father acts like it never happened and his mother gets teary eyed but pleads with him to let it go.
Anytime Vidrohi leaves the house, the citizens of Bhalzoos turn away from him. When Vidrohi confronts Dipen, he gets defensive over being accused of lying.
During that month, Vidrohi notices the other injustices the Riordan Militans, or rather cultists, on others. He hears whispers of rebel activity and see firsthand how their actions help those who have been wrongly targeted like himself.
Soon he feels the thirst for a strong drink and returns to After Sunset. He drinks to the point of drunkenness while talking to his dancer friend, Ishana, about what he’s been going through.
