A little drier and warmer than the central and northern portions of
The Great Plateau, the Wild Steppes stretch out across the flat prairie of the southern plateau. Windblown, under enormous skies, and traversed by tribes of
Centaurs, this land is largely unsettled and open, not often considered by people from the
City-States.
Geography
Laying across the southern stretch of the Great Plateau, the Wild Steppes consists almost entirely of prairie grasslands, treeless, and colorful with wildflowers. The land is somewhat drier than the Fertile Lands - owing partially to the lack of a river running through it - with the transition from farmland to grassland being considered the border between the two regions. The sole rise in the region are a pair of low mountains in the western half of the area; the western face of these mountains are covered in trees and suck a lot of moisture from the air before it moves over the steppes.
The steppes butt up against the southern range of the
Bloodpeak Mountains, with the steppe centaurs' sole city nestled in a bend of those same mountains. The edge of the mountains is also where most of the other structures in the area exist: mostly ruins dating back to the
Imperial Era, but occasional artificial caves of unknown origins can be found here and there as well.
Significantly, there is a pass through the Bloodpeak Mountains that opens up a relatively short distance from one of the most cataclysmic sites of the
Dragonscourge. It is not uncommon for adventurer parties to be waylaid by centaurs while traveling across the steppes to that pass on their way to seek out artifacts and fortune.
Populations
The steppe centaurs are the primary sentient population of the Wild Steppes. Ranging across the prairie following herds of
Hornbeasts and other animals, the tribes will also occasionally cross into the
Fertile Lands, raiding less-protected farms. The centaurs also maintain scattered permanent settlements in the foothills of the Bloodpeak Mountains, as well as a city -
Kor Centraek - where tribal leaders meet regularly to speak of matters important to all of the steppe centaur tribes.
There are a handful of settlements along the rim of the plateau as well - mostly small mining operations digging into the plateau and dropping valuable ore down to the lowlands. These operations usually have a small
Mercenary Guild detachment to protect them from centaur raiders.
Wildlife
Hornbeasts are common as are varieties of stagbeast and a number of wild predators. The larger herds are often tracked by centaurs as they slowly traverse the steppes.
