Alavar Scriptorum

The chief deity of the Monarchs of Ash worshipped by the Tevashi, Alavar Scriptorum was a mortal dwarf who lived almost two thousand years ago. Although his early life is obscure, most scholars believe that he was born 713 years before the rise of the Katari Empire, in one of the outlying tributary states of Vash Edom, which was at the time under the rule of the Faceless Kings. It is widely believed that in his youth he was among those who rose up against the Faceless Kings, making a name for himself as a brave soldier and a gifted tactitian, before settling down into the life of a scholar.   At the end of the 6th century pre-AK he became involved in politics once more, this time speaking out against the corruption of the Third Dynasty, and claiming that Tevashi society would inevitably fall back into the same patterns of tyranny as had characterised the rule of the Faceless Kings, if the hegemonic power of the noble clans was not broken. His message found an audience among the downtrodden and dispossessed of Tevashi society, and in 506 pre-AK he rose to power following a popular uprising which forced High King Tilgath abd Zuriel ur-Yammu into exile, and was elected King of Vash Edom. During his reign, which lasted until his death in 407 pre-AK, he instigated numerous reforms throughout Tevashi society, and brought an end to the dark practices of the worshippers of the Gods Below. Among his many reforms were the abolition of the caste system and abolition of slavery; the standardisation of the runic alphabet; the outlawing of mortal sacrifice; and the creation of the guilds and the Tevashi legal system.   It is said that on his deathbed he decreed that he would break with tradition and, rather than follow the ancient funeral rites of Stythe and Kheth, he was to be cremated upon the forgefire and his ashes mixed with ink, which would then be used to make copies of his books of law and philosophy; thus Alavar is sometimes said to live on forever in his works.   Some sources credit him with the creation of the first enchanted automata, though most historians believe this to be allegorical; rather, it is believed that his reforms popularised the use of automatons as a replacement for slave workers within Tevashi mines.
