Eels of Cheskin
The Eels of Cheskin are the most influential of the three tribes of the Vale of Chesk, and are the overlords of a number of smaller tribes outside of the vale. They and their vassals are infamous as river pirates, and have such a mastery of the rivers that they have been known to range hundreds of miles into Corlindale and the Gateway States, extorting barge-traders and raiding farms and hamlets along the rivers.
The Eels are led by King Elagast Blessed-of-the-Twelve-Rivers, who in recent years has fancied themself as something of a philosopher king and patron of the arts, much to the wry amusement of those beyond the borders of the Vale. They have written - or, rather, dictated to a series of slave-amanuenses - a great many works that could, if one was being generous and loose with definitions, indeed be referred to as philosophy, but would perhaps be more accurately described as a loose, rambling and deeply self-congratulatory record of their thoughts on whatever topic happens to be on their mind at the time. Whilst Elagast has, among outsiders, something of a reputation as greedy, vain, conceited and easy to buy-off, those close to them know that this an act, and that they are in truth far shrewder and more ruthless than they appear to be.
