A Heart of Stone, Finale

General Summary

22 Marpenoth (2nd Day, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)   Town of Saltmarsh, The Sword Coast       The fisherman, Slate, spent half the night making potions of water breathing for the adventurers who offered to help him recover a sunken treasure chest full of gold coins that will ensure the financial well-being of his family once he reverts back to being a statue.   With all four aboard Slate's fishing boat, Slate led them along the coast to where he knew a pirate ship had sunk.   They arrived at the sunken shipwreck just before highsun. Circling the wreck were four reef sharks.   Sethra and Garrick knew the sharks liked to hunt in packs and were dangerous.   Garrick, who was an aquatic elf and could breathe underwater, did not need to drink the potions Slate made. Sethra chose to remain on the boat and use her spells against the sharks if need be. That left Garrick and Timmorn who agreed to dive to the treasure chest. Timmorn was the only one to drink a potion.   Garrick, who could swim as fast as he could walk or run, grabbed the end of a rope he would use to tie to the chest. He then jumped into the water and swam to the bottom as fast as he could. Fortunately, the water was clear and visibility was good. It made it easier to see the reef sharks which were starting to move towards Timmorn who couldn't swim as fast as Garrick.   Garrick tried to tie the rope to the chest as fast as he could. Meanwhile, Sethra used magic missiles to dispatch two of the four reef sharks. Fortunately, the spell didn't cut the sharks' skin. Spilled blood would certainly draw more sharks into the area.   However, Timmorn was starting to worry about a reef shark that was heading towards him. He drew his bow and took a shot. Not meant for use underwater, the arrow shot forward at an angle and missed the shark. Timmorn knocked another arrow, but the bowstring broke!   The shark was suddenly upon Timmorn!   Timmorn felt the reef shark's jagged teeth tear through his leather armor and into his leg. Sethra, who was short on spells shot fire bolts at the shark. Unfortunately, fiery bolts fizzled in the water barely hurting the shark who kept attacking Timmorn. Timmorn tried to fight back with his fists which were easier to fight with than his weapons in the water. Timmorn's blood mixed with the water all around him causing the shark to go into a frenzy.   A second shark, larger than the one on Timmorn, was drawn by the blood seeping out of Timmorn. It quickly made its way towards him. Luckily, Timmorn was able to kill the shark attacking him before the larger one reached him.   Sethra hurled more fire bolts at the larger reef shark, doing little to harm it while Timmorn kept pummeling it with his fist. The shark managed to get bite his right arm. In return, Timmorn did what any longtooth shifter would do. He used his sharp teeth and bit the shark's fin, tearing a large chunk off. The shark momentarily loosened its mouth. With Timmorn's right arm free, he dug his sharpened nails into the shark's eye. With his other hand, he grabbed the shark's mouth. And with all his might, he pulled the mouth one way while firmly gripping the socket where the shark's eye used to be. Timmorn felt the shark's jaw snap. The shark flicked its tail once, then its body went limp. Timmorn let go of the shark as its body began to sink to the bottom.   Timmorn was alive, but barely. He had lost a lot of blood. He swam up to the boat, got in, and bandaged his wounds.   "It would have been nice if Slate helped," Timmorn said.   Sethra pointed to the boat's stern. Timmorn looked towards the rear of the boat. He saw a statue. Slate had reverted back to his original form before the alchemist bestowed upon him a short-lived gift, or perhaps curse, of humanity.   "Damn." was all Timmorn could say.   Working together, the three were able to haul up the chest. They didn't want anyone in town to see what they had recovered so they waited until night to return to Saltmarsh and to the Snapping Line.   In the Snapping Line's kitchen, they opened the chest. Inside were gold coins from all across the Sea of Swords. There were 700 gold pieces in total.   The next day, they agreed to split the gold four ways, giving a share to Slate's family who was distraught with the news of Slate being petrified. Sethra, who wanted to maintain Slate's secret past, told Slate's wife he was turned to stone by a rare sea medusa they had encountered near the shipwreck. She believed Sethra going as far as to thank her and the others for making sure Slate's petrified body was returned to his family. Slate's family said they would place the statue on their farm. Along with the share of gold from the recovered treasure chest, Slate's family sold the fishing boat. With the money, they paid off Gellan Primewater what they owed on the farm.   Garrick went back to working the tavern, while Sethra and Timmorn, who needed to rest and heal, both paid for a week's stay at the Snapping Line as they considered what other adventures they may find themselves in while in the town of Saltmarsh.
