The Hobgoblin Lair, Part 2
14 Flamerule, The Year of Twelve Warnings (1494 DR)
Delving deeper into the hobgoblin lair, Arik and Jon encountered a ferocious bugbear named Gorg the Bloodyhanded. Together the father and son adventurers were able to defeat Gorg without sustaining any serious wounds.
After searching Gorg and finding a clearly labeled potion of healing, the two continued on. Jon insisted on checking for traps as they traveled down narrow corridors. Eventually, they found themselves in a large chamber. Thanks to Jon discovering a pit trap at the room's entrance, the two safely entered the chamber.
The chamber appeared to be an ancient dwarven shrine. Six alcoves—each with a statue of an ancient hero of the stout folk—faced a crystal skull on a granite pedestal that glowed with a gentle blue light. As the two approached, the skull floated off the pedestal and relayed a cryptic message in Dwarven. Unfortunately, neither Jon nor Arik knew the language.
They checked the room further for traps. They didn't find any. However, they did find two more potions of healing labeled in common and a silver holy symbol: a silver anvil with silver flames on top. Not recognizing the symbol, they decided to take it along with the crystal skull.
There were no more encounters as they made their way back to the Alderleaf farm with the crystal skull in their possession. Arik said perhaps the wizard they're looking for may speak the language or could at least cast a spell that could help them understand the skull's message. Naturally, they could always find a dwarf to translate for them, but both Arik and Jon preferred not to show the crystal skull to any dwarf.
Back at the Alderleaf farm, the two were greeted with many thanks and a fine highsun meal. By mid-afternoon, Arik and Jon got on their horses and rode towards Daggerford.
