Salisbury Plains

The wide open plains of Salisbury have often been both a boon and a bane to the people here.   The earth is chalk and on the entire plateau, woodlands are sparse, as it is only divided by a handful of rivers and streams, and many a rider can find themselves lost on the Plains unless they know where to ride. The villages out here are far between each other.

Geography

The boundaries of Salisbury Plain have never been truly defined.
However, the river valleys surrounding it, and other downs and plains beyond them loosely define its boundaries. To the north the scarp of the downs overlooks the Vale of Pewsey, and to the northwest the Avon. The River Wylye runs along the southwest, and the Bourne runs to the east. The Avon River runs through the eastern half of the plain, and to the south the plain peters out as the river valleys close together before meeting at Salisbury.
The Hantonne Downs and the North Downs are chalk downland to the east and north of Salisbury Plain, and the Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase are to the southwest. In the west and north west the geology is mainly the clays and limestones of the Blackmore Vale, Avon Vale and Vale of Wardour.
The Mendip Hills rise to the west of Salisbury Plain, and the Cotswolds to the north west.

Fauna & Flora

While the plains are mostly long streches of grassland, in the dells and vales, you can often find groves of beech and ever-green conifers like pine and yew. The land is good for grazing and a herb-wise person would not have trouble here with thyme, juniper and hawkweed growing along the plentiful heathers.   The plains are home to far more birds than ground-dwellers, with cranes and bustards being the largest of them. Often, you see goshawks and harriers on the hunt, with quail  and partridge being found here in surplus.   As for mammals? Roedeer and other stags can be found here alongside both bear and wolf, but they often prefer the woods. There's quite a few foxes here though.

Natural Resources

A few quarries are here, where one can get plentiful limestone for construction. However, several places on the Plains can be used to mine bog iron ore, something that has historically been given the right to the Baron of Wereside.

People have lived here for as long as anyone can remember and you can find traces of it everywhere.
